    Burning Road ( PS1 )

    Burning Road

    Developer: Toka

    Release: 1996

    Format: PS1

I have fond memories of this game. Daytona is one of my favourite games, and this PS1 copycat title, whilst not coming close to the SEGA masterpiece, was at least enjoyable.

I haven't played it for many years, but I remember the visuals were pretty nice. The details, such as... rain, snow, lightning etc... gave it an impressive quality. The movement and feel were decent too- with a good framerate

Overall... I really liked this title. It may have lacked tracks and features, and didn't compete well with the big SEGA & NAMCO racers, but it did provide quite a few thrills!

I wonder if it still offers any entertainment value?

I remember that. Actually very good fun but how close it was to Daytona!! I'm surprised they didn't get sued ! Everyone could tell where the track design came from.

Yeah I recall this title. It was actually graphically more impressive than the Saturn's version of Daytona, too. However I remember it being painfully simple and it didn't offer the challenge of Sega's racer. However the design was a complete rip-off, as others have commented.

The same developer did the side-scrolling fighter 'Legend' on the PSX as well, which I believe was the sequel to the SNES fighter of the same name. They also did Soul Fighter for the Dreamcast.

Can?t believe it?s been 10 years since I played Burning Road. I seem to recall it being a solid, fun racer but obviously not as good as the games it was ?inspired? by. I?d certainly like to give it a spin now just to see how it has aged.

Great thread.......i remember this game with fond memories, yes it is a blatent Daytona rip-off inc the music, but hey Daytona was a great game and considering the disapointing Sat ver this filled the hole well, and gave the Sony Fan-boys something to talk about for 5 mins

The fact that it copied Daytona was definitely a good thing. Most devs were making rally games, top-down racers, or Ridge Racer wannabes- so an opportunity to play a Daytona inspired experience on the PS1 was more than welcome.

I really liked the feel and movement of the game- it ran fast and smooth, and the vehicles had weight. The environmental effects were cool, with the lightning on the night stage being very impressive for the time, and I remember one stage being inspired by another SEGA classic- Scud Race!

Sadly... it was very lacking in tracks and features. It was basically just a lightweight bit of fun, and far from offering the depth Daytona delivered.

It's a shame we haven't seen more Daytona wannabes. In fact... it surprises me, and what the hell ever happened to XB1 Daytona with Live support? ( Don't you hate unfounded rumours? )

Toka had some great tech guys. Legend on the snes has really good graphics and effects, Soul Fighter is quite nice looking, but sadly the gameplay in both is less than exciting.

Another case of... " Great tech, shame about the design! "

I remember getting that game on import having no idea what it was beyond a driving game, and being pleasantly surprised. Really solid fast 3d for such an early PS1 game.

Am i right in thinking it had a vocal title song daytona style? I'm not sure as in my head the song i'm hearing is exactly the same as daytonas just with the different title

Yeah... that tune was such a blatant Daytona rip-off, that my mind told me I must be remembering Daytona's instead.

Good to know my brain was right, and to laugh at Toka's audacity!

I'm going to have to track a copy of this down now for the Retro Core treatment. All this talk about it is really bringing back memories !

Scud Race was released after Burning Roads Japanese release IIRC.

I just assumed that because both games were released in 1996- that maybe Toka had time to copy a few things from Scud-Race as well.

I'm sure there is a night track with an airport- which looks similar to the infamous Scud Race track. Maybe I'm imagining it.. but that's what I thought about the music.

I think I need to buy a copy of this!
