Definitive list of Japan Dreamcast models/serial numbers/box designs?

Thanks to Yakumo for the PM help on this but I am still confused...

On the http://http://www.dreamcastgallery.com/dc/gallery.asp there is a series of pictures but I am trying to tie up serial numbers/design/box etc.

The very first launch models of the DC with the Yamaha drive/cooling pipe/metal fan - which model number did these have and which box design (orange with one pic of Sega man or multiple pics etc)? Or was the same model number used for the next models (no pipe/plastic fan etc).

If the model number is the same can you tell externally if you have a first gen model?



Can anyone help - I want to try and get a launch model but make sure I have the right box etc.

Do you want serial/model numbers etc... for later models too? I have an R7 back home.

I'm certain the launch one had multiple pictures of the Sega Pres. on the front, and was orange on the rest of it. I no longer have it sadly./

Oh yeah, I forgot that I have a BRAND NEW R7 for sale ! Bloody hell SegaMark, good job you mentioned that otherwise that R7 would have been sitting in my store room for ever !

That's the one I have which is a day one system. There are others who say that the one with all the pictures is also a day one system. So all that I can think is that both were sold at the same time but saying that I'm not too sure if all the DC TV adds had been aired by then. So that makes me think that the box with many pictures isn't the first release.

Yakumo, what is the model number of yours (1st day one) and is it possible to identify as a first gen other than the model number?

What I mean is does the first gen (cooling pipe) etc still use the same model number as the following (cheapened?) model?

Can other Japan owners post their model numbers if different please?

(All my Edge mags are in storage but I remember a big write-up on the DC launch from Japan - if anyone has it to hand that definitely illustrates the box - IIRC there was only one box design at first).

sorry but I no longer have the original casing to it. I did a case mode years ago so now it's smoke black colour. My other Dreamcast systems are all modded too (pure black and a Silver and Black one) so I can't check any of the numbers But wait, maybe the box has the number on it? I'll check it out over the weekend since the box is in the storgae room.

The Wiki page on Dreamcast used to have a list of the model numbers on it (I've used it before to cross reference my DC model numbers). It was presented the same way as the model list on the Saturn page, but on checking today it seems to have been removed.

I can't remember back to when I bought my original Japanese Dreamcast on relase, but I am sure it was only the orange box with the single president picture. I also don't seem to remember it being packaged with any modem, just a dummy module. I really, really regret selling my machine those years back.

The one I have now, I got second hand and it came in a later models white and orange box. I have a second machine that I was previously using that is currently in the loft, which is definitely a later model. I'll try and retreive it tomorrow and post the model number up here.

I remember waiting in the line on the day of release to buy my Dreamcast (one of 3) man, they were such great times! What I'll do is take a look inside the system tonight and see what number is written onthe motherboard. By the way, mine came with a modem. I'm pretty sure all Japanese systems did but the Hong Kong ones never.

Thanks for all the help - a bit more searching seems to confirm launch boxes were one big pic only. So far though all Jpn DC's seem to have the HKT3000 model number???

Apparantly PAL models are HKT-3030 and US models HKT-3020. "Kiosk" models are HKT-3021 (US) and HKT-3031 (PAL).

I'm not 100% sure about this so please correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that NOT all of the 'Presidential' Dreamcasts are infact HKT 5100.

I was just looking at a Japanese site that had a few boxed DC's for sale and some were in the unique orange Presidential picture box but the machines inside were in actual fact HKT 3000 machines...not the desirable HKT 5100 that you would expect if you had purchased a launch machine.

Now, either the sellers of these items had the wrong DC's in the wrong boxes ( which is more than likely...check to see if the serial numbers match ) or Sega released a few different variants of the DC but still used the Presidential box until a new design was created, for example...the plainer white box with the orange writing.

It would seem that if you want the early launch DC with the quieter fans and quiet Yamaha GDROM drive the only thing that matters is the actual HKT number on it, not the outer box...if you could both to match then that would be lovely.

I don't think the HKT-3000 number means much regarding it being a launch machine since my Biohazard version (released in 2000) is also a HKT-3000 model.

If I had to guess, I would say HKT-3000 means it's "Mil-CD" compatible.

I've also got a couple of normal JP Dreamcasts that came in the regular white/orange boxes (with no President picture) and both had modems. One is a HKT-5010 and I'm not sure about the other one, but I think it might be an HKT-3010. I would need to dig the box out of the loft to know for sure, but I definitely know it only has a plastic fan.

I thought really hard about my original Dreamcast purchase and now I think about it I think it came with a 33.6kb modem, I think I must be getting my consoles mixed up.

I've also been in the loft and the other DC, is model number HKT-5010 complete with plastic fan. Again like the other DC in my posession this was bought second hand, it looks like the box and console aren't a direct match for one another either.
