Jet Set Willy - anyone finish it?

Just an obscure thought \ discussion in my office.

We all remember it, we all played it lots, but no-one here finished it.

Did anyone? Was it as huge as we thought? Or has misty eyed nostalgia scaled it up to some insurmountable challenge?

    Thoughts please?

I thought one of them was impossible to finish due to a bug... maybe that was JSWII (which was, btw, waaaaaaay bigger).

I tried once with the aid of a POKE but fell off a cliff and kept respawning above the drop for infinity! That put a stop to my plans!!

One day you shall pay for this Matt Smith you evil genius!!

I tell people I finished it a lot as a claim to fame but it's actually a lie - I co-finished JSW2. On the Amstrad. Now that I've exposed the lie I may as well go all out and admit that I did a lot less work than my mate did because it was his computer and he knew the game much better than I did.

But I still say I finished it.

Naw, I finished JSW2 on the speccy using an emulator, save-state, and a lot of patience. I didn't collect EVERY item, but I got most of them, which seemed to be enough. The wee man, after finally getting to bed, went into autopilot and started walking to the right. He eventually (somehow) ended up in the Central Cavern, the first screen from Manic Miner ... the subtitle on the screen was "Oh crap, not the Central Cavern!!!", or something similar.

JSW 1 was impossible to complete due to bugs in it.

Not exactly. It was very, very difficult to achieve because I believe in the Spectrum version, once you passed through The Attic, a bug made future screens a bit random in their outcome due to memory overwriting. SP did issue some POKEs to correct the problem. I actually believe the two kids credited with completing the game first had already done this part off their own bat in order to beat the game.

Either way, there was still the teleport cheat to use in game to jump to most rooms.

The conversions didn't fair any better either; both the BBC and C64 games have bugs in them preventing completion (though different to the Spectrum ones).

              Oh and there's this heh...

Oh, since my avatar is from JSW I should probably know more about this.

The prequel was Manic Miner and that was certainly possible to finish, although I only ever got to about level 15 (of 20). I should go back and try again.
Jet Set Willy 1 had 60 screens and was actually impossible to finish due to bugs, but they released some pokes to fix it:

                # Moving an invisible object from the First Landing to The Hall (42183,11)
                # Removing a killer object from the Conservatory Roof (60231,0),
                # Changing a block in the Banyan Tree to a walk-through type (56876,4)
                # The Attic bug fix Poke (59901,82).

The latter bug was quite amusing. On entering the Attic room there was a memory overflow and some of the other rooms (including Quirkafleeg) got corrupted and killed you on entry. At first the software house told people this was on purpose to make the game harder (the rooms were "full of poison gas"), but later they relented. First ever game patch!

JSWII was an expansion on the first and a fix of the bugs. I didn't finish this either due to being to young to care, but had plenty of fun in the space levels.

A friend of mine at school drew me a map of the entire of JSWII. I watched him do it. He sat down and drew it in front of me. Out of his head. All the room names. It was totally accurate too. KKKeeerrrraaazyy.

Ahhh the days of mapping games on graph paper. I used to do it all the time, but I can't for the life of me remember what games.

Anyway, I never did complete any of the Willy games. I did complete colin the cleaner though!
