    ONE time favourite horizontal shooter?

To pinch from Big Seany's topic, how about horizontal stuff?

Never liked them as much as the vertical shooters but my favourite must be the conversion of R-Type 1 on the PC Engine. Sheer brilliance, atmospherse, difficulty level, etc.

Not many others I would consider but Sidearms on the Engine too was another true favourite.

I would go way back and would have to say i was really into Dropzone, the simple gameplay was so addictive, alright it was only a defender rip off but still. Then i got into Gates of Zendecon, (hope that's how it's spelt) on the Atari Lynx.

Of course i was also into Gradius, R-Type and Salamander but i think these will always get a mention.

Gradius V - I love my hori shooters & there's so many that I adore, but Gradius V is the daddy; sublime, tight control, beautiful, challenging. Great.

Ahh, here's my thread, where have you been all this time?

It's Gradius V. As much as I adore the previous titles this have certainly cemented the standard of the traditional horizontal variety.

I have to say, I think it's a lot harder to pick a favourite hori than it is a vert.

There just seems to be more GREAT ones to choose from. With verts it always boils down to choosing between 2 or 3 games.

I really agree with this - the sense of achievement when you first finish it is awesome.

...and another vote for Gradius V, though Gaiden pushes it close. And I'll always have a soft spot for Scramble, because it was the first one I ever completed (in as far as you can finish it).

Christ - much more difficult choice, this. Under duress I would have to say R-Type Delta, but there are so many others I count among my fave games.

Delta is the one I play the most; as updates of old titles go, it is one of the very best which harnessed the extra polygon-tastic powers of the console whilst still retaining the cracking, cast in stone R-Type gameplay. Nice music as well. Yeah - that is my fave for sure.
