it appears to be that and also known as Devil Hunter Yohko, which i guess it a translation?

I knew it as Devil Hunter Yohko too (that was around the time of release)

Yeah, the translations used by importers back in the day suck big time. Especially on PC Engine games.

A better translation would have been Demon Hunter Yoko since Mamono actually means Demon not Devil. Close enough I guess.

Indeed, as Akuma is Japanese for Devil.
