    Jap Megadrive 1 Issues

    Hello all!

I recently got a Jap MD 1 from ebay...the AV cable was faulty so I tried my mono Neo Geo RGB lead. This gave me an ace picture but gave a loud buzzing sound as well as the normal game audio. I plugged some headphones into the front output and the audio was pretty scratchy. Would buying a Stereo Scart lead from somwhere like VGI be the answer or does it sound like it's screwed?

I guess I should get one for my neo anyway...thanks in advance.

      Hey jonathan,

Well first off, using a Neo Geo Mono RGB SCART cable - whilst it may appear to work, the Neo Geo actually uses a circular 8 pin din plug, whilst the Megadrive 1 uses an offset 8 pin din plug - this is where the two top pins are slightly offset by a few degrees.

What this means is, a seperate cable should be used for Megadrive 1 and Neo Geo, whilst the difference in the plug is only slight, continous removal and insertion between the two different types of sockets, can wear down the pins (and they can break off).

Also, it is worth noting that the Megadrive 1 does not include any resistors in the video circuitry, so the RGB output is too intense, whilst the Neo Geo posesses these resistors, and therefore needs none in the RGB cable.. - you'll find that with a proper Megadrive 1 RGB SCART cable in-game text will become much clearer and readable, as well as everything being much more "crisper" overall.

The audio on the Megadrive isn't that great anyway.. I have noticed quite a bit of buzz and hum myself.. just take the "Seeeeegaaaaa" sequence at the beginning of Sonic 1 for example.. MASSIVE hums just before that part.. I have seen a circuit on the Internet that can be built and fit into the Megadrive to supposedly make the audio "crystal clear".. but that is another thread in itself I guess

Anyways.. mission has linked you.. stereo cables would be available for a couple of quid more.
