What about Gradius Gaiden then, that just screams 'arcade' game? Another would be Super Ghouls and Ghosts, sure it had its problems but it was pretty good. Others that have popped into my head are Super Star Soldier (or similar PC Engine shooter), Axelay, or the Thunder Force games (i know there was a Thunder Force AC but thats just 1), maybe even stuff like Assult Suit Valken.

R-Type Final is obviously a home game rather than an arcade one - it's far too slow and considered. Gradius V though is more arcadey than most arcade games The combination of awesome graphics, slick gameplay and superb music really makes it seem like the sort of games they'd have in the arcade of your dreams.

It did on Namco system 12 my local arcade had it, didnt look as good as the dc version graphics wise.

I always found it odd that Final Fight 2 appeared on the SNES and wasn't a proper arcade sequel.

I think Thunderforce AC is based mainly around Thunderforce III.

Thats true, it is but IV and V were also really arcade style games.

Oh sorry I misunderstood. Thought you meant AC was *Thunderforce* 1. My mistake.

I knew it came out on the System12. I was saying that the Dreamcast edition didn't get an arcade release for the Naomi. I think it should have done.

There's a story (of some sort) to that.

IIRC, Final Fight had originally been given the name of Street Fighter '89 early in its design. After the coin-op's success, there were plans for a sequel, but it was ultimately sidelined in order to make way for the creation of Street Fighter II: The World Warrior.

The SFC/SNES-only sequels were basically a product of that.

The sheer amount of little touches in the game are fantastic. It pays homage to eight other Irem titles (7 of them arcade games) in some very smart ways. The naming of some of the ships is also sheer genius.
Perhaps this is wasted on many, but I think Final is a far greater game than Gradius V, partly because of this.
Irem could quite easily have made it into an arcade title (by editing certain parts of the game), in the way that Namco made Ridge racer V into an arcade game.

Delta is no different to G-Darius in terms of it being a cross platform title. Could quite easily have been a JAMMA PCB, as well as a PS1 disc.

It's a shame the the snes sequels are poor. They just pale in comparison to the original. I guess Capcom put one of their less talented teams on the job.

I'm not a fan of playing console games in my cabs but there would be one exception - Gradius V. If only it wasn't a Konami franchise it might have seen an arcade release (or if Konami did something other than bemani these days). The PS2 version doesn't even support 480p so will never look as good as it could in a cab either.

I really like the third one. Although it misses some of the atmosphere of the first game, it plays far superior.
Also I agree that R-Type final is superior to Gradius V. I enjoy Gradius, but R-Type just has so much re playabilty to it that for me there is no competition.

Gradius V is the undisputed champ of this thread. It basically is an Arcade game. Although, with a single loop lasting well over an hour it would need to be edited heavily if it was to actually make any money.

What about a game that didn't even appear in the home, let alone arcades?

Was always disappointed this never materialised. Had the potential to be awesome, just like F-Zero AX/GX...
