Mega Guide - Feb 1993 (Sun Newspaper Pull-out)

    Hello NTSC-Uk!
A few of you may recognize me from other places... Ive decided to make NTSC-Uk my new home for Retro discussion. I used to frequent a few other forums, however after a leave of absence lets jsut say that on my return it seems very much in decline. No names mentioned
However after a few visits here, i feel very much at home and feel that the users here are helpful and very interesting

Anyways i thought id introduce myself by giving something back as a 'thank you for having me' in advance
The other day, in one of my purchases, i found this lovely Sun newspaper sheet, the 4 page Mega Guide from Feb 93 featuring reviews, previews and cheats
Its a nice read and a blast from the past i thought id share with you all!

Apologies for the odd lines where the images have obviously been stitched back together in photoshop, but ive done the best i can with an A4 scanner!

Hopefully this will be a good read to a few of you and i hope i get on with alot of you real soon, talking and trading! Until then, enjoy my first thread

    Thanks again,
    Adam

Welcome, shame things aint 'Mega' anymore. Everything was 'Mega' in the 90's, i say everything, i mean everything excecpt the snes and gameboy although prehaps they should have been called the mega nintendo entertainment system and the nintendo megaboy. Yes, yes MEGA!

Oh my days! There's some proper beauties in that thing! I mean, it's got a little article about the proposed 32-bit CD drive for the SNES, Mad Dog McCree, cheat codes, and even someone's game codes written all over the pages! Just goes to show that gaming really isn't what it used to be. Great days.

Heh... though when it came to the SNES it was "super" this and "super" that... tons of games with that at the start!
Lie with passion and be forever damned...

              Hi Adam!

That brings back some memories. Not just the games, the fact that people actually used to read stuff that was printed on paper.

Lol I think most SNES games began with super for some reason, wasn't there even things like Super Tetris? It as if they thought it made the games better because they started with super.

Welcome to the ntsc-uk retro section, Adam.

I'd say that we're a mixed bunch of people here: some "Mega" .... some "Super" .... but all friendly.

I'm personally a SuperNintendo obsessive - with a fondness for the MD too, and anything 16bit.

I hope you help to liven this place up.

Thanks for those newspaper scans. They bring back memories of the 16bit days.

                Cheers!

I have the MEga Guide thing for SF2 from the Sun somewhere. Will scan it in if I manage to find it.

That was a blast from the past! - I can remember looking forward to reading things like that every week in the paper.

                      Brilliant scans.

Thanks alot guys Hopefully ill be able to contribute to the scene

Youre all speaking the truth, games (imo) lack substance nowadays.. Its all about the guns, girls and cars.
I recently got hold of GTA IV and i can honestly say ive only spent 1 hour on it! Ive spent most of my free time played the fan translation of Monster World IV for the Megadrive on my flash card!
Dont get me wrong though, GTA IV is incredible, however for me it just isnt 'Mega' or 'Super' as you guys put it!

Same goes for print! Im hoping there are some fans here of the Super Play and Mean Machines magazines! Now those are gaming magazines!

I might start a discussion about this issue. Are a lot of people suckered into all the hype, believing that they "Have to Play" ... the latest, most hyped games, driven by a sense of "Missing out" ... even if they know in their heart that they don't really like most GTA style games, fps titles, and simulation racers etc...? ....

I'm guilty of this. I often feel compelled to experience the "Latest & Greatest" gaming experiences - only to be left cold, and with a far lighter wallet.

There are many many hyped games that I've bought this decade, only to feel let down, and very underwhelmed.

I've bought the Resident Evil games - Metal Gear, Gears Of War, Forza , etc..... and I didn't like them one bit. Why the hell do I still believe that ResidentEvil5, MetalGear4 etc... will somehow make me happy? ...It's madness on my part - hoping for a miracle, and I think a lot of people share my experience..

I do have far more self control these days - though I'm still not able to resist the compulsion to buy some big name games, I have a strong feeling I won't really like.

Discovering retro gems - and playing my favourite old games, is what puts a smile on my face, but I still wish more modern games were actually as "Fun" ... as I'd wish for.

It's so stupid, I do actually have a twinge of excitement for MGS4 even though I find the gameplay of the others a mite tedious.

I'll always be a fan of good games mags, though. Paul Davies C&VG, Maximum etc. You just don't get 'em like that nowadays although RG is great (but not in the same way).

Time to crack out the SFC this lunchtime, then.

Print magazines aren't anywere near as good as they used to be. Mean Machines was, and still is, the best mag EVA, with CVG, SuperPlay, Sega Saturn Magazine, Maximum, GameFan, SegaPro, Gamers Republic and several others getting worthy mentions.

I've done a few features on classic mags for Retro Gamer...check them out here.
