    Guilty pleasure games

You know, retrogames most press and gamers seemed to hate but you kind of liked in a weird way.

When i'm thinking of guilty pleasures, I think of:

-Zombie Revenge. Slaughtered by the press, but I absolutely liked this game. It was about mastery imo. Master the controls (I would go as far as saying the arcade stick was required) like know when to block and melee, and underneath is a very challenging game you won't 1 credit easily. I could reach the HotD level with my first credit, but after that you'll get lamed to hell.

-Star gladiator 2/Plasma Sword. Was released on DC and the visuals were not altered from System 12 at all, I think thats the biggest reason why it was being ignored. Because for the rest it had fun and fast gameplay, nice specials, good music and quite a few characters. My DC is broken but I still play it on Zinc sometimes

-Sega Touring car. Basically see Zombie Revenge and replace arcade stick with analog controller.. well maybe not a good comparison. Its a lightning fast racer which is hard to master and gets better with analog steering. I like it a lot.

Zombie Reveng to me is just far too hard and anoying but I do like the "bastard" bit after the credits

Now Sega Touring cars on the Saturn looks great but moves like **** however plays like a dream once you master the controls. I love that game. Just a shame about the choppy frame rate.

Legends of Valour (Amiga) - I know it was slated on release for being a poor man's Ultima Underworld, and I'd be surprised if anyone still plays it in the age of Oblivion and WoW, but I just can't stop loving the freedom this game allows. I never had a PC so I never got to experience UU, so Legends remains a personal favourite of mine.

Centurion (Megadrive) - Apparently the Amiga version is far superior and, admittedly, the graphics and sound in the Megadrive suck to say the least, but this is a game I still go back to today. It's as simple as f*ck, and there's little strategy to the game, but I just love taking over Europe again and again.

Wing Commander IV (PSX) - For me this is one of the greatest games I've played. I just love all the FMV, the variety in the missions and the feeling of being involved in some kind of sci-fi epic.

Star Trek: The Next Generation (Megadrive) - An average game but I'm a bit of a Trekkie, so...

Ground Zero Texas (Mega-CD) - I loved quite a few of the cheesy FMV games on the Mega-CD, God only knows why. You can also throw in Night Trap, Sewer Shark and Road Avenger as I loved them all! Even Cobra Command FFS!!!!

The Ninja was good indeed. Fun overhead scroller. My most played MS game along with Shinobi.

I agree on STC's framerate Yakumo, its subpar and prevents the game from being a true classic. I guess a lot of hate (such as SSM) was also directed towards the 50hz PAL version. The NTSC version is *slightly* smoother.

Zombie Revenge is awesome .... Great visuals, sound, and a joy to play.

Another pleasure... has to be SPAWN on the Dreamcast. Fantastic visuals, lots of blasting action, and I love the atmosphere. The camera may be dodgy - but it's not a major problem. Multiplayer is fun too. It should have received more respect.

Shadow Of The Beast( Amiga ) .... Stunning visuals(still) ... music that never fails to impress, and it's simple arcade action. It's a shame that the sequels were poor - because no1 isn't that great in the gameplay department. They should have kept the same look - only gave it better game mechanics.

It's really hard thinking of guilty pleasures. I don't tend to like truely weak games.

Dino Crisis 3 comes to mind. A game that was plagued by an atrocious camera amongst lots of other things. But I liked the visuals, the cutscenes and the power up system. The game started off very hard but once I got the hang of it I could actually finish the game.

I've got a thing for B Movies, and by proxy, it has rubbed off onto my gaming habits. I've developed a bit of an obsession with budget releases, usually by 505 games.

Zombie Hunters (oneechambara), Bujingai Swordmaster, Victorious Boxer 2, Michigan... the list goes on.

I've also recently got into the Romance of the Three Kingdoms titles. Extremely slow, full of dull looking menus and a steep learning curve (it speaks volumes that the first time I started playing it I fell asleep), but all have an unfathomable depth and a strange feeling of satisfaction when you achieve something. Preparing to go to war against your rivals appears dull to anyone looking over your shoulder, but to you, who has created this empire from nothing, it is ten times more exciting than your average FPS.

Thing is, I feel no guilt about all of the above because I think they are all cracking games! Just my housemates occasionally give me funny looks when they are raiding on World of Warcraft or play CoD4, while I sit there staring at a bunch of menus, planning my next move.

You have to feel sorry for gamers who think COD4 type experiences, are the 'be all and end all' of gaming.

They are missing out big time. Finding quirky, distinctive games, is a real pleasure. I'm glad that there are little gems to be found - it really adds zest to the gaming scene.

The same with retro games. I'm still coming across fun titles - that I've never played before. I get as much pleasure from finding a fun arcade experience from the early 90s, as I do with some of my favourite modern titles; maybe even more.

Games are about having fun. People should be more adventurous.

Well the press has cast some sort of tunnelvision upon gamers. A game thats geared towards old school gamers such as Time Crisis IV will get crappy reviews nowadays. The same goes for 2d games if they are not stacked full of bonuscontent, its always a low score.

The mainstream, non-gamers, or whatever, is sensitive to these opinions and will ignore these kind of games on forehand and rather buy GTAIV or whatever. Not trying out anything different than the usual FPS or TPS.

Its sad, old school and niche games will die out due to a complete lack of demand.

I think there have always been an element of "Casual Gamers" ... who only buy hyped titles. It's been far worse over the past 10years, though.

You can look back over the past 15years - and list all the fantastic titles, that haven't sold well, and realise that the big majority of gamers just buy what is put in their faces.

When people talk of "Hardcore" "Serious" gamers - I think it means that the gamer has an adventurous attitude towards games.

This lack of an adventurous spirit amongst the Playstation Generation of gamers - is really disheartenting. It means that the games, gamers like me love, are often seen as "Flops" ... therefore sequels don't appear, and an overall air of apathy surrounds them in the publishing community.

Imagine a world where Panzer Dragoon Orta sold millions - Outrun2 was seen as the best racer, and Shoot 'em Ups are still popular.
