What model Mega Drive is this?

    I just won this auction:

and I am not sure what sort of model it is.

Hard to find? Common as dirt? any background on it?

It's a megadrive 2. Not much rarer than the first model. only stylistic differences really (also looks better when joined to a megaCD 2).

Believe it came with the 6 button controller but I may be wrong

Do all Oz MD2s' have the Jap colour scheme? i.e. Red cart flap and Blue reset button.

It's a Japanese Sega Mega Drive 2. A picture of one and a few details are here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sega_Me...and_Sega_Nomad

That's what I thought, but it says on the box that it is "PAL"

          Japan is NTSC-J ain't it?

Yes it's an Asian/ Hong Kong spec machine. It should play both PAL and Jp games @ 50Hz.

Its as said here, plus you have the added bonus of an Asian Sonic 3 there!

I auctually don't want the machine at all really, I only got it because it was so cheap and it is such a mint looking set. I was planning on offering it to someone for the price I paid + postage.

Wow, wish I'd seen it earlier - would have liked to identify it for you!

I think that the Asian MD2 is one of the better looking models. A plain black MD2 is a bit dull, but the red flap touches it up nicely!

Might be worth installing a 60Hz switch. (Look at mmmonkey.co.uk, but not sure if it's the same internally as a UK machine).

I thought all Asian MDs ran games from all regions (not just PAL/NTSC-J) without modification?

Asian MDs don't run everything, there are quite alot of region locked games that won't run withiout installing Hz and lang switches. I ran into this when I first found an asian md in a charity shop.

Ah yes, I understand about region-locked titles, but I thought it at least ran most US MD games unmodified?

You were very lucky to find one in a charity shop - I'd **** a brick if I found one in there!

An unmodded Asian MD will run most US/ Japanese games but then again so does an unmodded PAL Megadrive. I think they are set to 50hz and ntsc settings so any game that is either 60hz only or PAL only (there are a few) won't run without a dip switch converter or modded console.

It was lucky finding one in charity shop alright, it pretty much got me back into 16bit gaming after a long absense. I thought it was japanese as it came with japanese copies of Hellfire and Herzog Zwei. Only later did I work out it was asian due to the black screen borders and it refused to run a Japanese Contra cart.

Asian megadrives are great, i use one for my main unit. So far i've only had problems running a few of the later NTSC releases on it.

                          I'm interested in it BTW
