I agree about RSG, have owned it a couple of times and not found it that enjoyable to be honest. The saturn is an ace system with the right titles though. I guess it depends on what you want out of it. I've had a great series of Saturn collections in the past and have always eventually sold them - but I guess you could blame emulation for that. Having said that the Saturn is easily one of my favourite console's of all time.
I'd argue the most balanced and possibly best shooter on the system is 'Battle Garegga', not neccesarily my favourite though.3DS FC (updated 2015): 0447-8108-3129

I like RSG a lot. It had a lot to come back for. I was hunting all the dogs, or trying to get the highest chains possible. 2 different modes was a nice touch too, although I kind of wished they eliminated the speech from the otherwise superior Saturn mode (Ohtrigen etc = big time own).
It felt rewarding if you were already pretty high leveled early in the game, because it meant you nailed its chain system, boss 100%'s and dog hunting quite well. Basically, if you didn't play by the games rules you would be punished. Your levels would be too low to do significant damage. Some hate it, I liked it. Better players got the better rewards.
Ikaruga was faster paced, but there weren't many extra features. RSG felt to me as a more complete product.

Hmm, I think getting into a console that's past is very difficult.
I never owned a Saturn at the time and only got one recently the games are good - but I don't have the nostalgia that goes with it.
Same with other consoles too. Never had a PCE, Master System, Neo Geo and while I know there are great games on there but I will never look at them the same as I do with the consoles I owned at the time.

The recent Saturn reminisces encouraged me to seek out a replacement step down (mine stopped working ages back) and last night got the console setup again in the spare room on the 4:3 CRT.
I only got my Saturn back in 2004 (JP model) so my appreciation of the system has nothing to do with nostalgia (I was a PlayStation owner in 1995 onwards) but getting the system up and running again reminded me how enjoyable a lot of its library is. I think it's retained its identity over the years a lot better than the Dreamcast. A lot of the Saturn's best titles can still only be played on a Saturn. I was actually surprised at the amount of games I had still sealed that I bought years ago but intend to get through some of them over the next few weeks (I had a sealed copy of Battle Garegga sitting there for 5 years and it's a cracking conversion, a textbook example of how to port a shooter in terms of screen options, restart options etc.)
The Saturn port of OutRun is still to this day the best home port of the game. Street Fighter Zero 3 with the 4MB RAM cart was for years the only way to play the game at home for full arcade accuracy (only the recent PS2 compilation has bettered it) and I still think it has the best port of Vampire Savior (probably Capcom at its finest after Third Strike).
I need to hunt out some of games mentioned in this thread though. I have a nice collection but I do feel I'm missing some of the console's true original classics. Although I have Burning Rangers, Guardian Heroes, Panzer Dragoon and Zwei the majority of the other stuff I have is the retro compilation discs and arcade conversions.
I suspect I have a good few weeks of gaming ahead of me

My Saturn had been in it's box for the best part of this decade and only a few months back did I decide to bring it out of retirement. It was fun playing some of my old games again.
Because the Saturn wasn't a popular as the PS1 back in the day, you may find some of the better games are harder to find. It is quite a nifty console however few games really utilized the dual processors. Many might consider the console to have too many quirky or odd titles but I think it comes down to personal taste what games you will enjoy, for me I love Darius Gaiden as it's an excellent shooter, I also think Street Fighter Alpha 2 is great.
One of the main reasons I bought a Saturn, apart from being a Sega fan, was to play Sega Rally, that game is easily one of the best home conversions ever.

The big three of Sega Rally, Virtua Cop and Virtua Fighter 2 in '95 was a great time to be a Saturn owner.

The best games for the Saturn are the ones that aren't 3D. Go for the 2D shooters, Bomberman 10-player, and puzzle games.
32-bit 3D, however impressive at the time, looks lame these days. Although, Sega Rally is still nice to play( not as fun as it was back in day though )
If you buy a Saturn with all the games that were technical marvels back in the day, you'll be disappointed because they don't stand up in the modern world. Just stick to the 2D stuff.

Ok, i've so far ordered guardian heroes, bubble symphony and shin shinobi den from japan. I won't be home again untill the 3rd of july, so i can get another couple of games ordered in time to be there for me getting home if we have some more 2D offerings.
I made the mistake of looking at youtube vids for that stupidly expensive saturn game thats currently in the for sale section, i REALLY want to play it..........

I also still love the look of Virtual Fighter , also features hands down the best and most bone crushing soundeffects in any game ever
