Question about Mother 3

I've just installed the Mother 3 translation on my phone and it runs very nicely under vBag, I must say.

Anyroad, what I wanted to know is whether it's okay to play through it before playing Earthbound? I have never played Earthbound but I want to pick it up for the SNES at some point so will I be ruining it by playing Mother 3 or are they like Final Fantasies in that the stories are separate?

The story is largely seperate but there are some references to Earthbound, particularly in the last chapter.
