Just last week the Internet was stormed by the news of an upcoming project by Yuji Naka and his Prope studio. Ivy the Kiwi? is a game designed for Windows Mobile and is also said to be a release for the DS. It is becoming more and more common for older game design icons from Japan, once capable of making the industry take a step further, being reduced to small budget games for iPhone, the DS or the Wii. No matter how original and inventive these titles may be, one is left thinking how much more the videogame industry would benefit from these designers if they were given, today, the tools they deserved.
Yuji Naka dispenses presentations. His work in the Sonic series has brought prestige to SEGA consoles and gave the ruler of the platform genre the grief, times and times over. Nights was different, however. As a game it didn't correspond to any particular genre - possibly the reason why so many players and game creators praised it - namely Miyamoto.
I've read this interview a few times along the years. It's from Hobby Consolas, a Spanish magazine I used to purchase during the 16/32-Bit age. Upon reading it again last week I thought it could interest some readers and so decided to translate it to English. Not only does it confirm that there must still be some alternative versions of Nights, close to finished, it also reminds - me, at least! - of better days. I hope you enjoy it.
