Action Replay (Saturn) problem

Had one of these carts for a while now, but it no longer seems to work as a memory backup. I can still play all my import games (JP and US on a PAL machine), but whenever I try to copy game saves from the system memory to the Action Replay cart it just freezes on the "Saving to Cartridge - Please Wait!" message. Rebooting after a while shows that no data has actually been saved on the cart.

I've tried cleaning the cartridge / slot, but wondered if there's anything else I can do? Can you format Action Replay carts?

Thanks. I've just been digging around in there. There are plenty of solutions for dirty cartridge slots, and memory carts that don't boot at all, but nothing for an AR cart that works in every respect other than as a backup memory.

I've learned a lot about the Saturn otherwise, though...
