    Nes/Snes or N.E.S./S.N.E.S.?

What do you say? Nes or Snes as one word? Or do you spell out the letters each and every time? Don't know why, but it gets right on my raving titties when people spell out the letters, and it always seems to be Americans. Don't they have acronyms over there? I'm guessing they don't, since I can't count the number of times I've had to roll my eyes as some dolt refers to an initialism as an acronym. Protip: if you're just reading out letters, it's not an acronym. Those have to make a NEW word.

Why does this bother me? Because it's incredibly jarring to be reading a sentence and come across "an NES". NO! It's clearly "a NES". If you're not going to bother putting the full stops inbetween all the letters then you can just stop that right now!

On the other hand, it's also annoying when writers expect you to read out an initialism in full. For example if they write "RPG" they always expect you to read it as "Role Playing Game". Why else would they write "a RPG". What a waste of time.

Maybe this should have gone in the irks thread. Can we have a Retro Irks thread?

Yep, Super Famicom or Super Fami but NEVER S.F.C. that's just retarded just as N.E.S. and S.N.E.S. If I was using the western name which I don't because I never owned one (I had a SFC) nore live in an English speaking country, I'd say SNES or NES. Actually for the NES I'd just call it a Nintendo.

Nes or Snes, pronounced how it's written. I'd say 'Super Famicom' if I'm actually refering to a game designed for the Japanese hardware specifically (though even then, I probably wouldn't really think about it and would just say 'Snes'), or speaking to Japanese people. It would be a bit daft to say it to friends in the UK - either no-one will know what you're talking about, or you'd come across as pretentious.

I don't mind 'Super Nes', that was pretty popular in 'the mags' at the time. Actually saying 'N.E.S' or 'S.N.E.S' is silly because it's so awkward - why do it?

I call a NES a Nintendo too. I never had a SNES either hence the S.F.C. It's too long to say Super Famicom IMO. Plus nobody would know what I was on about whether I said that or "S.F.C." anyway. Although I did call it "Super Famicom" at school when the SNES was still yet to be released as people seemed to be under the impression that they were two seperate consoles.

Sega Genesis is the one that really ****s people up though. Personally I've always called Mega Drive's "16 Bit".

Really? That's a new one tbh!

My uncle owned a Japanese Megadrive, and it was what I played until I got my own, so 'Megadrive' it is.

Yeah. Other kids would say "What computer have you got?" and I'd answer with "16 Bit". Most people still had a Nintendo or a Master System at that stage, so they'd think I had a Master System too if I just said "Sega".

Jason who lived in the next street also called it "16 Bit". I think it was because the JPN units had that massive gold lettering so he actually thought it was called that. Lol.

While we are on the subject of retro irks, it proper annoys me when people refer to "Alex Kidd" as Alex THE Kidd. Morons.

For SNES, I say Super Nintendo. I usually say Nes, but if I'd owned one back in the day, I probably would call it a Nintendo.

My housemate does this all the time when we're playing Sonic Kart. It's really annoying.

I say Nez/Snez. Yeah, really gets my goat when Yanks call it the S.N.E.S. or, worse, a Super N.E.S. -- that's four or five syllables when they could just use one. It just sounds a bit retarded.

"N.E.S." and "SNES" (or "Super N.E.S." or "Super Nintendo") for me, personally.

                            Go figure!
