As I'm sure a lot of you know who view my Youtube channel (http://www.youtube.com/user/Lorfarius) until recently I've been pretty much collecting all sorts of retro gear for a variety of systems with no thought or focus, just see a game on Youtube, on a forum or in Retro Gamer and out comes the cash. This got me to thinking that maybe I should stop being so caviller about it all as I usually just buy a game, play for 5 minutes and throw it on the pile. This wasn't helped by me being off work with a broken leg and a sprained ankle for 4 months as I had a lot of time to do nothing but spend!
Throughout all this madness one system has always been my most played/treasured and it's the good ole NES. Brilliant games that are quick to pickup and play yet sometimes hard to put down. I do enjoy buying games hunting them down etc so I thought what better way to combine the two and not give up retro gaming entirely than to try for a complete UK NES PAL A collection. This consists of approx. 280 carts (I have a list I've gathered from the net but still need to get it confirmed) with the codes UKV and GBR plastered on the front. I've already got 60 or so carts with quite a few rare ones (such as Miracle Piano) thanks to my mad collecting so it was a good place to start. I have also put a thread in "Wanted Gaming Items" for these carts but sadly no replies yet.
I currently have a PAL NES which has had the snip inside to allow it to play US games as well as a new 72 pin adaptor to fix the blinking problem but sadly it seems the blinking still returns from time to time and it can take a few reinserts to get it to boot games. I've had the same problem on other NES's over the years and replacing the adaptor helps but never really fixes the issue, looking around the web it seems that the toaster's were generally rubbish anyway and there's no 100% cure of this problem.
This led me on to thinking that maybe I should pick up a Toploader but the issue here is no AV out leads just RF and horrible black bars appear on screen due to poor shielding inside the system. Both can be fixed by modding but that in itself can cost a fortune (and there's noone in the UK I can find) plus the cost of the Toploader itself....just not worth it as that cash could be used for some rarer games.
So this got me to thinking that maybe I should consider one of the NES Clones that seem to do the rounds. I see them all the time on ebay that are compatible with Famicom and US NES games but I can't recall seeing one for PAL. Do they exist?
I've heard that the clones tend to run with around 90% of NES games with the odd sound or graphical glitch but I really don't mind this (I'll still have my toaster afterall) as I'd be happy just being able to slot a game in first time and have it run for the clone to test games. Does anyone have experience with these clones, can you give any advice on which one to buy? Baring in mind I need a PAL compatible one. I don't want to spend a fortune as I might as well get a Toploader if it get's to silly money.
