Oh man - 5 pages of gameboy chat. It's enough to make me cry with glee! . Mole Mania is one of the best games I've ever played. On par with Tetris imo as the best game on the system. Shadow Warriors is also a top, top game. Earth Liberation Army ZAS is something a bit special if you can find a copy!
Some of my favourites that are maybe a bit unusual and haven't been mentioned already:
Ninja Spirit. JP only. It's a great side scrolling slasher.
Nettou Samurai Spirits: Zankuro Musouken - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FIOd4P7eJXQ. aka Samurai Spirits. This shows the original GB could do 2d fighters as well as the NGP. JP only unfortunately.
Radar Mission - It's battleships with a few nice twists. I love it. Might not be everyone's cuppa tho.
Catrap - This is one hell of a great side-on puzzler. It's well paced and rewarding, using 2 characters to give a new twist on things.
Great Greed - Bat**** mental RPG that I just couldn't stop playing because it has bags of charm.
Fortified Zone - Like Mario Land, this can be completed in about an hour. It's like a metal gear pre-cursor.
Nemesis 2 - Return of the Hero / Gradius 2 - Intersteller Assault. Plays like a movie, a real step up from the first.

Heiankyo Alien, Amazing Penguin and Noobow are also worth a shout.

There are so many great games out there. Don't limit yourself to boxed / complete and you'll be able to pick games up for pennies. Great machine to collect for.

I played Daedalean Opus (correct spelling) all the way through, back in the day, and sent the final code word into Mean Machines, allowing access to any level. Can't remember what it was now, but I got my name in Mean Machines! Great puzzle game.

Maybe it's a good thing the Jap name is just Puzzle Road - easier to spell. Anyway, when I finally get around to collecting Mean Machines mags, I shall be checking your claims for veracity

Thanks also to Zipper, you didn't let me down. Some obscure titles for me to look out for too. I have been wanting to play Heiankyo Alien for about 14 years, ever since I read about it in a gameboy guide book - one of those by demara, or whatever his name is. You're right about having an easier time getting cart only copies too. I am a bit obsessive about having things boxed and complete, so I think it's healthy to just buy a loose cart once in a while, and just enjoy a game for what it is.

Theres a wonderful game called Shin SD Gundam knight gaiden: Gundam knight monogatari that plays like zelda but it's SD Gundam, the dungeons & everything else is fantastic. I never tire of playing it. I'd truly love to get a mint complete one but it rarely turns up complete on yahoo auctions. I was lucky enough just to find a loose cart on ebay, spent years playing it on emulator before that, feels lovely now that i can pop it into my light for under the duvet fun.

Love retro gameboy i wish i had made more of an effort to collect it back in the day, there are so many weird & obscure titles. Ones that appeared & went with no fanfare so very few seem to even know they are out there. Least i found all the Ganbare goemon games they are the ones i really love the most on gameboy.

My Game Boy of choice is my launch Clear GBP from when I was about 6. Still in fairly good condition too! Unlike my GBA and original DS.

There's a jap game I remember really well as being fun, Roadster. Top down racer, nice cute artwork and really playable. Not sure how kind time has been to it…

As for playing, my silver GBP from launch is still going strong, but has Tetris virtually glued into it.

I remember the hassle I had getting my first Game Boy Pocket. Halifax were doing a deal where if you opened an account with them and deposited a certain amount of money, you could get one for ?15 or something. Several months later I still had no GBP - apparently they were out of stock. So my dad went down there and kicked off, came back about an hour later with a beautiful black GBP. So yeah, REALLY out of stock. Just goes to show, if you don't take any bull**** from people, you can get what you want.

Hehe you don't get sqat in life by keeping quiet

My GB of choice, pics don't do it justice as the screen is far nicer in the flesh. If you want to hear of GB light bargains, ask Cauterize how much his gold GB light cost him LOLOLOL

Has anyone ever played Faceball link up? Doesn't it support something ridiculously high, like 16 players?

If I were a millionaire, I'd buy 16 gameboys, 16 copies of the game, and then cart the lot to each of those retro events that takes place just so that someone can actually claim to have experienced it.

Funny you mention that John. We're planning on doing just that at Eurocon this year. Someone has 16 (!) copies of the game, so we just need to bring along 16 Gameboys...

Having decided many games are just out of my reach boxed/complete, I'm going to go cart only for stuff like Castlevania II...to that end, does anyone know anywhere you can buy the plastic clamshells? Quite a few cart only games on fleabay are missing them :/

Oh god, i want this SO badly. I have been looking for years for the skeleton yellow gameboy light it's the rarest of them all & there happens to be a complete pristine one on ebay. Sadly £300+ is way beyond for my budget for a light, but thats about the 4th one i have ever seen in the last 8 years, thats how rare they are.
