Mario & Wario save question

Quick question, my copy of Mario & Wario on the SFC does not appear to be saving when I complete levels. It seems like too big a game to be expected to complete in one go. Does the game save progress? Is my cart's battery knackered? Are Nintendo crazy, expecting us to complete 100 stages in 1 sitting?

Well, the batteries are close to being 20 years old now.

Oh, I'm not complaining. These carts have held up very well, only one other I've got has given me gip. I just wanna know if the battery is dead, or if there was none there in the first place.
