    Revisiting Sega Saturn

Disclaimer: This thread is Shamelessly ripped off inspired by our very own noobish hat...

So here we are folks, a console I completely missed during it's original release and now looking to try and re-live with the help of Official Saturn Magazine.

So here's what I'm planning: Similarly to noobish - read the mag, play the games of time current month however at my own pace. I won't play games I have already played on other formats (no Tomb Raider or Resident Evil for example) I do intend to replay Capcom's fighters though.

Please feel free to comment and play along.

      The last great gaming magazine

Given the sheer amount of import coverage towards the end of its life, I'm not sure it really counts as a PAL magazine!

Doing so myself at the moment and it is interesting playing through multiplatform games such as Resident Evil which I am playing through for the first time on Saturn. I don't know whether it is just the pad but these retro games just feel right on the Saturn, despite the extra loading times of some games.

You're in for a treat. I never owned a Saturn at the time but bought one after getting sick of all the sequels and general mainstream rubbish on the PS1. It was the first console I really collected for and the first time I'd seriously gotten into import gaming. There are some amazing games for the system; it's probably my all time favourite. I hope time has been kind to Panzer Dragoon Saga as it blew me away when I played it. Such an intelligently made game, if Werner Herzog made games they'd all be like Saga.

Panzer Dragoon Saga remains great, in my opinion. Being a game that doesn't really conform to the rules of any genre, there hasn;t really been any games since that have executed the formula better. Everything down to the soundtrack, to the subdued colour pallet to the intentional omission of a large number of NPCs creates a world that still feels lonely and desolate, yet with such character.

I thought I'd do a little write up for the launch games on the system seeing as technically I haven't got to issue 1 (it's 4 months away...)

              Daytona USA
I started with this one seeing as I have fond memories of the arcade one and well it's pretty disappointing... it looks pretty bad, isn't full screen and runs at 20fps, it does at least feel like Daytona and is still fun to play, but it also lacks content compared to other home ported arcade racers (Ridge Racer...). I imagine for the time it was just cool to have a home version and I'll bet I'd have had a much better time with it if I'd played it back then. As it stands I like finishing my Saturn sessions with a quick race or two but can't help feel like it was a missed opportunity really...

              Virtua Fighter
Probably the less said about this version the better really, it's buggy and feels a bit rough. The plus side it plays better then the original Tekken does today... I can't say I really want to try it again to though be honest...

              Clockwork Knight
This was a pretty much by the numbers 2D platformer which certainly didn't match the playability of similar style platformers like DKC. It's serviceable but not something I could get my teeth into. It's ok but also pretty underwhelming...

              Panzer Dragoon
Thank god this is part of the launch - else this post would have been pretty negative! Thankfully this game is pretty special... Fantastic opening to set the scene and build it's world, brilliant music and wonderful, charming and distinctive graphics. I'm finding the gameplay to be instantaneous yet fun and challenging with enough depth to want to replay. Ultimately the art design is flooring me in 2012 and I've replayed my favourite 'episodes' over and over. It's just a wonderful, charming experience and certainly something that's unique to the system and deserves some sort of revival...

The greatest games magazine ever i.m.o. Nice to see you have what looks like every issue. Im still missing quite a few but have most of them including the demo's. The machine really had some wonderful and unique games that publishers wouldn't even green light today With Nights being the prime example. I hope you find the time to play through all the classics including some of the forgotten big games like Bug! and Bug Too!

Super Play and The Official Sega Saturn Magazine were the BEST British mags ever made. maybe Mean Machines would follow a close second but not Mean Machines Sega. That was just childish crap. Less said about **** such as the official Nintendo Magazine the better.

Noobish is forcing himself to play even the most ****tiest games to completion. Will you be doing that? Or giving them a 2-5 min spin before shelving them permanently?

I'm certainly not going to do that, but I'll try and give most things a fair shot. I'm not just playing Saturn afterall I'm playing modern games too...

Your next one should be Virtual Hydlide.

I always thought the original Saturn Daytona was the only home version that played like the original arcade. I had the Dreamcast and XLBA versions and they look great but just don't feel like Daytona. I spent ages fiddling with the settings on the DC to get it to handle like the original but even with the steering wheel it was nothing like it. The graphics on the Saturn game didn't bother me too much but it would have been nice to have multiplayer.
