    SNES Games - PAL / NTSC-J / NTSC-U / Who gives a sh**???

So guys I am now starting to build a little SNES collection & I'm torn between regions.

I have access to 2 consoles (Moded US with the tabs removed / Moded PAL) & I'm just wondering based on the fact that I can play everything full speed / Screen should I really care what region I buy games from??

Obviously the Famicom boxes are a million times better to look at then the god awful stuff you get from US / UK versions but there are some tities that I want that are much much more expensive for Jpn versions than the US/UK versions.

For example a US boxed version of Super Star Wars will set me back ?18 + shipping from VGI whereas the same Famicom version is around double that.

Now I'd really like the Jpn version but not sure I can justify the extra cost for a prettier box.

At the end of the day I want to play the games more than I will look at them so should I just shut up & buy the cheaper version & enjoy it??

    Also what about PAL stuff?
Is it worth grabbing cheaper PAL versions where possible or are there speed issues with them on modded machines??

    Ta

isnt that the reason most people collect Japanese games though (other than full speed) etc

if you not fussed about the box, and just want to play the game, i personally wouldnt give a monkeys chuff about the cardboard and buy it. its just going to sit on a shelf anyway

You'd be crazy to buy PAL stuff, unless it's an exclusive or you have no other option. You'll always be able to sell on NTSC SNES games for more if you decide to do so in future and you'll avoid issues with speed and PAL optimised games. Since you have an NTSC-U SNES with the tabs removed you should just look at NTSC-U and SFC games and buy whatever's cheaper, provided that the language barrier isn't an issue.

Buy a SNES, region/hz switch it and buy an Everdrive.

If you're worried about cost then you shouldn't be collecting.

Lol I had looked at Everdrives but decided they weren't for me.

I'm not really worried too much I'm only cherry picking & buying the games I enjoyed the most as a kid & some cheapies that I never experienced before so I'm looking at titles like Contra 3 / Castlevania IV / Price of Persia etc. but the cost seems to vary wildly bet tween regions & who happens to be selling them.

I reckon I'll just plump for the cheaper NTSC/U or J version

          PAL is a no go!!

Thanks for the input anyway guys.

As far as consoles go, a modded SNES is no different to a US/JP machine - so that would be a significant saving.

If you're cherry picking then I'd personally plump for boxed JP, or just get US or JP loose carts. Something like that.

I've already got one of each console anyway...the fine mr Mmmmonkey modded both of them for me so it was just which one I preferred & as the US already has the wider cart slot I think I'll be using that for my gaming, saves using an ugly cart adapter or hacking the PAL one up for US software.

I'll just be a bit more selective with the games & buy Jpn where possible...except maybe with Return of the Jedi...that's obscene to buy at the moment

There is a bit of wisdom here, I think. Collecting games, by definition, isn't a "smart" thing to do by any way you might try to spin it in terms of expense/cost/value. You do it because you want those games. That's part of the reason I don't do much collecting I don't feel games have any inherent value unless I'm actively playing them.

At one point i'd have loved to have a vast collection of SF stuff, but i left it too late. Nowdays finding anything in mint shape is pretty hard to say the least. Grabbed a handful of my most loved games in physical form & then just left it at that.

Nowdays emulator hooked upto tv with usb adapter & super famicom pad is more than good enough for me if i get the urge to play.

I've had bundles of cheap NTSC games in the last two years. I find PAL to mostly be more expensive than NTSC.

For example I won mint copies of Yoshi's Island (?8), Top Racer (?1), Super Tennis (?1), Super Mario Collection (?3), Vortex (?4) Super Metroid (?24), Donkey Kong 2 (?8) all on SFC. Also picked up games like Exhaust Heat 2 (?4), Super Mario World (?0), Astro Go-Go (?8) Axelay (?12), Super SF2 (?8), Super Mario Kart (?18) all in good condition.

US games can be had cheap too if you are patient. I've spend roughly ?1000 on my SNES lot in around 20 months and I have 70 odd games, most complete and most of the best RPG's for all of that.

Just make sure you spend as little as possible on the SNES Star Wars games.

There are still those of us who do collect PAL games, it never bothered me when I was growing up and it still doesn't bother me now, the games still play the same as when I was a kid. Even the box art appeals to me more than the jap boxes, it's just what I grew up with.

I think you are asking the question on the wrong forum though, this is/was a dedicated NTSC format forum

Some pal games do have nice boxes for sure. I grew up with pal but ntsc is a must tbh.

Yeah, if you're going to choose between English language versions on the strength of boxart, UK/Euro is usually gonna win.

Then of course there's the Neo Geo Pocket Color, where the Euro boxart was the best in the world.
