    Megaman 2 / Rockman 2

    Anyone played this game recently?

I never had an NES, so my first time playing Megaman was on the Gameboy. Found the first impossible, and still do.

However, the second was excellent. It is now available on the 3DS shop - by that, I mean the Gameboy version, as the NES one has been there for a while.

I haven't lost my touch. Breezed through Clashman and Metalman. I think I did Woodman next in the old days, will pick it up and continue later.

Megaman 2 seems as hard as all the other games in the NES and PS version, but this Gameboy one is surprisingly easy to get into.

So, have you played this or any of the early Megaman games recently? How do they hold up in your opinion?

Megaman 2 is the first game I ever got for the NES (after SMB, which was bundled with the system). Excellent game, of course, and all of them hold up pretty well even today. I've played almost all the games in the main and X series, and I also had the GB version which was alright IIRC although it lacked a few robot masters. I remember it mixed up robots from 1 and 2.

I don't understand this talk about how 'hard' Mega/Rockman games supposedly are...? They certainly pose a challenge but there are harder games... On the other hand, I don't remember beating Megaman 2 very often, while the main stages were quite simple.

Played MM2 NES it for the first time in years when I got my Everdrive N8 recently and it has stood the test of time very well. Some of the platforming is more reliant on memorisation than I remembered but it never feels unfair- just a good test of skill.

Quite curious about the emulated 3DS versions though- do they fix the PPU sprite flicker, or is it left intact for authenticity?

The first one I ever played was Megaman 2 on GB. I loved it, and completed it. Then, having enjoyed that, I decided to get the first one, and found it maddeningly frustrating. Especially annoying was not being able to slide under low surfaces.

Do they fix the what? Let me know what PPU means, and I'll have a look for you.

PPU is the NES' Picture Processing Unit. MM2 occasionally has lots of sprite flickering, as the NES' PPU struggles to keep up with the sprites being thrown around on-screen. I think it was fixed for the PS2/GC collection.

To add, a lot of NES games really haven't stood the test of time but the Mega Man games with their big and/or clear spritework really look great and the music is top notch. Of course this might be nostalgia talking.

The NES version on the 3DS still looks a bit flickery, but I didn't play the original so whether it has been improved or not, I'm not sure.
