I was thinking of actually starting off an English collection, of at least a modest size with some of my favourite games from back then. I would go with Japanese titles, but I'd prefer to play in English.

You never seem to hear much about American Saturn games. Whilst I know it wasn't a rip-roaring success, was it a real disaster there or something?

More or less . There some good Saturn USA titles though . I know Yakumo hates it but I really liked Bug II and stuff like Three Dirty Dwarfs , WW Baseball 98, NHL All Star Hockey 98, Skeleton Warriros are really good titles . Plus USA is the way to go to play Astal in English and the best version of Exhumed/Powerslave , Duke Numkem and Quake on the Saturn

Yes, I've been pretty lucky and got the titles that are more expensive now back in the late 90s/early 00s. I must admit I went a bit 'yamatoku-classic' mad on the ebay and thought I might as well save on shipping

The item costs were Streetfighter Zero 2 (?1.95), Dynamite Deka (?9.56), Sega Rally (?6.27), Decathlete (?5.19) ...overall with shipping I'm very pleased price wise but have already found Sega Rally and Decathlete quite a lot lower than that elsewhere...like I said 'yamatoku-classic' mad. I imagine if I lived in Japan they would be practically free price wise.

Lol ah the old Yamatoku blindness it's happened to us all
I've on more than one occasion overpaid on games because I've got carried away with "just ?1 more bids" & then realising there was BIN for less elsewhere.

SFZ2 for ?2 is a ridiculous bargain though

One of the other issues with the US releases were those god awful boxes, they were just horrible, quite possibly the worst game packaging in history IMO

Most of those got a PAL release and can be forced into 60hz on a PAL Saturn and Three Dirty Dwarves is a very average scrolling beat'em up, looks great but is really slow and boring not a patch on Die Hard Arcade or Guardain Heroes.

That said Magic Knight Rayearth, Albert Odyssey, Megaman 8, Megaman X4 all got USA English releases along with a few other games, like Side Pocket 2.

On the PAL side of releases King of Fighters '95, Swagman, Deep Fear, Megaman X3, Keio 2 were all PAL only in English.

Guardian Heroes Pal is unplayable on 60 Hz machines , Duke Numkem also has some major issues and even Exhumed has small issues with the intro speech at 60 Hz . I really liked Three Dirty Dwafs nice simple fun with fab graphics and a fun 3 player main game mode

I know that TA as I helped write the Saturn 50/60hz list that everyone uses which can now be found here:

All the mentioned games you say including Three Dirty Dwarves are PAL optimised and have very little speed loss at 50hz, but yeah Guardian Heroes is unplayable as is Virtual On which both get a trippy colour effect all over the screen.

List needs updating but we are thinking of doing a huge video guide now for all the games.

Panzer Dragoon II is my all time favourite Saturn game. The original is great too like. Something about them, I never really got into the Saturn modding scene so I played them in PAL 50hz, I can only image how better it is in NTSC 60hz.

X-Men vs. Streetfighter is better than Marvel vs. Streetfighter. Heartily recommend it.

I would say I disagree, but it'd be kinda pointless to debate as they're very similar games with different character rosters. Marvel vs Capcom was a bit different to both, though.

Personally I always preferred Marvel Super Heroes Vs. Street Fighter, but that was because I liked Captain America and that game's version of Wolverine.

I have to say I found X-Men COTA to be better than either Marvel VS or X-Men Vs

Yeah they're amazing . Like the 1st one more (even though Zwei plays better) the Art Direction, Music and better Bosses wins it for me . Plus Panzer Dragoon captures the feeling of you and your faithful friend/pet (who would gladly gives life for you) like no other

I'm sure I remember have a UK version of Exhumed and playing it in 60hz with a switched Saturn, not sure about Quake and Duke Nukem though. Exhumed is such a great game, amazingly underrated.

Marvel vs has the best fighting engine of the entire series along with being the best game, but X-Men COTA was where the magic was when it first hit arcade as nothing was quite likely it graphically when it arrived.

I loved it. I used to play it in the arcades and even had the highly compromised PS1 version.

Yeah big fan of Marvel VS in the arcades first played it in Spain on holiday for two weeks after much practice I managed to defeat Mech Akuma in the arcade itself. Me and my brother still play the Saturn port regularly.

Just a shame Capcom of USA where a bit thick and didn't include it in the Marvel Origins PSN & XBLA release, shows how much the current staff at Capcom actually know, which isn't much.
