    Rose coloured gaming GBA review

Well it finally turned up, so i thought i'd do a mini review seeing as a few people are interested in Wiggy's work. Took about 8 weeks in total from ordering to getting it here.

Ok time to get the bad out the way, nothing to do with the mod work but the actual replacement LCD screen quality itself. I have no idea if all these kinds of screens are usually this bad but there is some pretty horrible ghosting on it. Well it's not exactly ghosting it's more like an after image that doesn't fade away fast enough, like on a plasma when you get a static image that temp burns in and takes a while to clear. I can be playing the first level & still see a ghost outline of the title screen text plus any other static graphics that have moved it's pretty distracting. Maybe i have been spoiled by playing on my micro, im sure i can live with it in time but it's a shame this part of the mod isn't perfect as well. Might be a dodgy batch of screens im not sure, anyone else have this problem?

Ok that's the only bad thing i can find with it, the rest isd all good the paint finish is beautiful it's so well done as are the custom cast buttons they alll feel very responsive to play on plus the glass screen is really nice as well. i have taken a few pics, it's a few shades darker in person as im guessing when they took pics on the website that they had a bright light overhead. It is really well done (apart from that screen letting it down a bit)

Thought this was 'just' a screen mod at first, but buttons and paint finish too? Is there a site for the full list of specs or anything? I am intrigued

They literally paint them from scratch they can do translucent colours too, the paint quality is amazing they also put on proper glass screens so much more scratch resistant. Their website is here

I did read about the dodgy lack of quality control on those displays. Shame really, was hoping to pick up a screen myself to install in a GBA. Maybe I can find some hard info on suppliers of better examples somewhere, short of pulling the display from an AGS-101.

That said, a Micro would satisfy my needs in conjunction with my GBL.

As much as I enjoy the shape of the original GBA and the addition of the new screen seems to make it complete I don't think you can beat the Micro in terms of image quality and sheer portability. Plus its got the best dpad I've ever used on a console.

I got one of these back in March. Not impressed with the customer service, but the unit itself is very nice. Not noticed any problems with the screen and the buttons are all nice and clicky, so much so that my Mrs moaned whilst watching the telly while I played!

Which is better: GBL or backlit DMG? I have a GBL but much prefer the design of the DMG.

Been playing Zelda 3 on my GBA lately and I have also noticed the screen burn mentioned in the op. The frames from the item screen and the menu where you choose Zelda 3 or 4 Swords at the start are the most noticeable.

Ludicrously expensive when you factor in the flawed display. Fair play though...

It looks lovely but the replacement displays let it down. Can't fault the paintjob though, still live & learn.

I really am surprised that with the amount of effort he puts into his wares from the pics to packaging and presentation he tends to screw the pooch quite often with a shoddy display or gimped buttons. Given the prices that people are being asked to pay a little QA isn't too much too expect.

Back in my console vending days I used to personally test everything and then put it all back together without anyone being able to tell just so that it was happy time when the goodies arrived, all handhelds were fully charged before shipping too.

Presentation and packaging are what makes this a premium product. People see shiny thing, want it, buy it - nothing more is said.

I have two GBAs from Rose Colored Gaming, and I don't see the ghosting as described by the OP.

One of the GBAs was done early on as RCG got started, the other is very recent. I will go back and check both for this issue, but I'm sure I don't have it as bad as the OP.
