What game would you play if your life depended on your ability?

Fancy way of asking what retro game are best at.

If someone was holding a gun to your head, and was going to shoot you unless you dazzled them with outstanding retro gaming skills, what game would you pick?

Super MarioLand for me. Probably the only game I can finish without losing a life.

My 267 lines at Tetris would probably be second.

The first Tetris on the GB? Damn, my lifetime high is 186 lines.

Cybernator. Beaten that game inside and out with and without the Napalm.

Sega Rally or Daytona USA both on the Saturn. I am the God or at least was back in the day on both of those games. I'm probably complete crap these days though.

Ridge Racer arcade, although that was 20 years ago.... It would take a few hours to get back into it. I never saw anyone with better times than mine in any arcade in London or Amsterdam.

no current game, but "back in the day"

Ridge racer PS1 - was super fast at that, completed the three laps without taking foot? of accelerator at any time, unlocked the black and white cars. but could i do that today? could i f***.

Alien 3 megadrive, on hard, all the way through one life

Pop n twinbee, spend days playing this game, tried it again a few months ago , and got no where!

so if my life depended on it, take me back 15/20 years yes, today no chance.

Maybe Link's Awakening, but that's really just remembering where everything is and what to do, so maybe the gunman would be unimpressed with that. Probably GB Tetris as well then, as when I played it a lot at university I used to get around 250 all the time. The secret is to train in the cheat-enabled superfast mode (level 10 heart, I think),then going back to regular level 10 seems annoyingly slow. That's the easiest way to beat B mode, too.

Shadow Dancer, Mega Drive, no shurikens or magic.

totally agree with you there, i'm nowhere near as good as I used to be, with the only exception being Street Fighter of any variation, so if my life depended on it, it would have to be Street Fighter II Turbo on the SFC.

Ridge Racer. The day I drifted the wrong way around a corner blew away my local arcade.

I suck at most videogames these days like a mal-coordinated giant, but have been a past master of Download on PC Engine, and Nights on Saturn.

                      Good question!

Sensible Soccer on the Amiga as I put an insane amount of hours into it back in the day; I remember putting outfield players in goal just to make things more interesting but that didn't go so well when I think about it!

I actually bought the XBLA release a few years ago just to see how well my skills had aged and I managed to get the "score with a diving header" achievement very quickly.

Defender, preferably on an Atari 2600. I expect I'm crap now though.

Shubibinman on the PC Engine. I can one life it with ridiculous ease.

Probably KoF96 after that. Prompting the CPU has never been so easy!

Rainbow islands, all 10 islands all 7 jewels in order on each level to get the 10 secret doors. True ending, something that a lot of people have yet to see.

The arcade version of Area 51. It's a surprisingly deep lightgun game and quite maligned for it's time. I could finish it without losing any lives and get all the bonus rooms back in the day, hell I even used to play a two player game by myself just to spawn extra enemies! I could probably do it at a stretch today, some things you just don't forget
