I say just do what makes you happy. I buy retro games for me and me alone ,I don't want to impress anyone with them or really care what anyone thinks about them ,I just enjoy collecting them .. period.

I would even go as far to say that it's one of the things that keeps me sane in tough times as it gives me something else to focus on.

When I'm dead and gone my wife and kids can sell them if they want and hopefully make a few quid.

Exactly, I never brought my AES to show off to anyone, I got it because it was the legendary console I’d lusted after since my mid-teens... turns out Last Blade and Garou are two of the best fighting games ever created too, so it’s a win-win situation. Oh, and that there Metal Slug is good **** too. Bonza...

But when I first got a Neo•Geo posting your daily life online as a sodding photo-essay wasn’t a thing (thank the Lord), so the online willywaggling that goes on now blows me away. Yes, I know I post some pictures of the **** I buy, but it’s certainly not everything...

Ultimately I think you can safely say that the folks that post on here on the regular are the nerdiest type of nerds due to a) the nature of the forum at its inception and b) the nature of the forum nowadays.

Back up your words with action @J0e Musashi and delete your account to prove you're truly beyond all of this and use all of that newfound time to take a reality check and go on a really nice holiday for your wife and children or just admit the truth that you, yes you, are the nerdiest nerdlinger in all of nerdistan. I’m still paying twice as much as you to play Dark Souls for the umpteenth time with the correct controls. I no longer play the dangerous and obsessive game of buying games that I won’t actually play because I act my age, and not my shoe size. I think J0e made some good points before the thread went south. There are definitely some people who spend more than they can afford on obsessive collecting, and would probably be much happier if they stopped. That can apply to people who collect anything.

Where I disagree with J0e is when he seems to think that that applies to everyone. I have great fun replaying old games, trying out old games I missed out on first time round, and, best of all, trying out consoles I missed out on. Especially since I've just had my first ever play on an AES two days ago.

Only today while my wife was shopping in the nearby mall I relaxed in its Starbucks with my Lynx for a couple of hours, and had a blast. On the way back I spotted (and snapped up) Star Fox Assault in lovely condition for 400 yen. There's a lot of space between hoarding and utterly minimalist gaming, with only digital games. For many people, there's a lot of pleasure in hunting out a bargain, whatever their hobby.

As for leaving games sealed, I can see why that might be called a waste, but for rare items, there can be a lot of pleasure just in the ownership. Comics are intended to be read, but anyone who owns a rare comic from the 30s isn't going to be reading it any time soon. It's probably going to sit in the safe deposit box. Similarly, Dad has a cricket bat signed by the great Wally Hammond, which is never going to be scoring any runs.
