Yeah, another example of consoles of the time having clear 'good & bad' points. When you were putting together a console with a retail price of around $199/£150, you couldn't deliver perfect(for the time) tech for 2D games that expensive arcade boards featured. But clever coders managed to overcome limitations and impress people.

I'd say that Street Fighter 2 on the SNES & PCE are games that talented people managed to get running well. The PCE version really did stun people. Turbo on the SNES delivered the best fighter you were going to see on the machine; it really did push the tech to the limits..

Surely the CPS changer has the best version?. Motorola 68000 only has a 16 bit external data bus so it's 16bits really (where it counts).

That's like saying a 'SuperGun' has the best version.

PC-Engine wins for its non standard HuCard on steroids.

            I don’t care really.

The PCE one is however the only version across all the systems that I’ve spent considerable time playing.

We get it Dave. Nintendo is best, there's no point in having a debate with you, when it comes to Nintendo.

That's juts my Point, everyone will just go for the version they played most as a kid and with their mates... Rather that the version that truly is the best and is the closest to the Arcade. That's true for a lot of Arcade ports on various systems... I mean I like the Master System version of Shinobi the best lol

I’m not even much of a SF fan TA, I only really got in to 1 on 1 fighters late in the Neo’s life, and SNK make the only ones I really click with.

Well, when I saw this thread, I made sure to go back to the PCE, Mega Drive, and SNES versions of SF2. I realised that I still feel the same about them. So Turbo on the SNES is still my favourite. I think it looks and sounds quite a bit nicer than the other console versions, but I know some people prefer the PCE or Mega Drive version for various reasons. It's just a case of which versions gels with you, seeing that all of them are trying to mimic the arcade version the best they can.

I'm still waiting for you to explain exactly which tech is missing from all other versions other than CPS-I and Mega Drive. I could do it for you as I'm well-versed, but this is fun.

The SNES version of Turbo is the best, coming from someone who at fourteen years-old paid £90 for the Mega Drive version of Super along with a six-button pad and played it to death. That was actually the only port I ever owned until the Saturn. In all honesty the differences are minuscule, with MUCH better graphics and sound trumping a couple of bits of elusive cancelling tech which I imagine very few people ever utilised effectively in the arcades, let alone on a controller.

That's what I'm saying... We will all go the version we played the most (Not necessarily the closest). My fav version. Of Mark of the Wolves is the DC version, simply because it's the version I played the most...

Dave as seen in other threads, it's pointless to argue with you over Nintendo. So I'll not bother. I will simply point out, that the Arcade game uses 6 face buttons. You may make the point, that you need to buy a new pad for the MD version, but I never saw you complain about getting the Pro controller for the Wii U, and since you are such a Big fan of Perfect Dark 64, I'm willing to bet you bought the RAM pack to get the best out of It..

It's not a case of going back to play the versions. Most will go for the version they played most.. My fav version of MGS is on the PS, my fav version of Sensible Soccer is on the Mega CD... simply because they are the ones I played the most with my mates

Well, I played them all back in the day, but to make sure I still feel the same way, I went back to them. I can see the good and bad points of each version, but overall I prefer the Turbo on the SNES.

It's the same with Speedball 2. I have always said the Amiga version is my favourite, but I recently checked all the versions out and concluded that I still regard the Amiga version as my favourite for a few reasons.

We can all talk about the past when it comes to retro games, but I like to see what I think about the games now, rather than focusing on nostalgia. Sometimes you change your mind, or find out you still feel exactly the same about any particular game. I think it's fun to look at things from a fresh perspective, so going back to the PCE, MD and SNES versions of SF2 was fun and interesting.

I think the point Dave was making was the same one I alluded to earlier (though I may be wrong) that the Mega Drive version being playable with a six button controller doesn't relate to the arcade version having six buttons. The number of buttons may be the same but you control them both with a completely different set of fingers (i.e you wouldn't play the MD version with your index fingers anymore than you'd press the arcade buttons with your thumbs) so the control comparisons don't hold up. The only real deciding factor in that area is whether you prefer having your thumb work six face buttons, or find it preferable to have two of the buttons on the shoulder where your index fingers can also be used. Other than visuals it's probably the biggest deciding factor in everyone's preferences, for me, one thumb on six buttons isn't as enjoyable ergo SNES Turbo wins.
