What’s the most recent gen to be considered retro?

All these years later I still play this game through every couple of weeks, and this first stage music still gives me a buzz every time I hear it.

As a kid I would take the bus to a nearby seaside town just to play R-Type, and nothing but R-Type. When I bought my first PC-Engine and got my hands on a copy of the game, it was one of the greatest gaming moments of my life!

360/PS 3 must be Retro now IMO

I wanna say chip music. So, pre-93/94?

Anything before video game music became regular music. So before the dawn of CD audio. Midi audio should still count.

Yeah, that's fine, so you could technically have Final Fantasy vii and the like. I don't want no red book audio with whaling guitars lol.

Although there are some great wailing (whaling?) guitars from the 16- bit era.

Or Prodigy’s Firestarter from Wipeout 2097. What a choon but doesn’t belong here IMO.

Talking of R-Type, for me Chris Huelsbeck’s intro on the Amiga is surely one of the greatest video game tunes ever composed?

That's a really nice, jolly tune. I like how it sounds pretty clean with a nice amount of oomph. SID...
