I read the game post and watched the video without reading your comment and my first thought was is this what the PS3/360 versions were based on. Doing a quick Youtube compare it certainly seems so.

I think it is generally regarded as a pretty good conversion. It has all the pit-lane skips and so on from the original.

I remember hearing it was around at the time, but never saw it in an arcade. Something certainly seems missing when you take away the "DAY-TON-AAAAH". It's a bit like when they stripped all the licensed music and destinations from Crazy Taxi. It shouldn't make a big difference, but it kind of does.
