    PS1 Model advice needed?????

Looking into upgrading from my tiny PSone to one of the original models, i want to get one of the fatty ones. As there's so many board variations & models does anyone know which model has the most reliable laser/boards in them out of the fat original models? as i think the laser in my psone is starting to go. It will need to be one of the NTSC japan models

While the PSone is a great model the finger room you get to put in disks and take them out is far too narrow for my bear sized hands, the risk of dropping them while taking them out or scratching while putting in a disk is quite high. Plus i have nostalgia for the original model as it's the one i first had.

SCPH-9000 was the last of the phat units, no parallel port though.

If you had a spare PSone you can also drop that laser into a 100X unit, the BAM laser in the PSone is best.

Otherwise I'd probably just look to get something in the 5500~9000 range and hope for the best.

My understanding is that ones before the 5000 series have the laser that breaks due to a plastic mechanism, the ones 5000 onwards have a revised laser with a metal one - I think?
