I've never read Famitsu, what with it being in Japanese and all, but its apparent generosity with review scores has always reminded me of something like how Variety review movies. Closely linked with the industry and therefore generally supportive rather than having an awful lot of critical distance.

That might be off base but it's the impression I've always received.

      PC Gamer was mint.

I couldn't really tell you what the magazine was like but the disc was phenomenal.
It turned Half-Life into a game that lasted several years with the stream of mods each month.

Famitsu is okay, but I can't read Japanese, so it's a bit pointless buying it.
If you can't read it, it's the magazine for people who think Edge isn't L33T enough.

I bought a copy in Japan for prosperity but can't remember what was reviewed.

I do, however, really like the idea of multiple reviews.
A wise man once said "One man's yuck is another man's yum" and I think different perspectives help give a better opinion that one person's arbitrary score out of 100.

I read Tabletop Gamer magazine and think they'd benefit from this idea of everyone who played it chipping in why they did or didn't like it.

Only words to end it on, really. That actually gave me pause, even this many years later

          1999 - DC UK
A Dreamcast dedicated magazine, this publication was unfortunate enough to be cut short by the short life of the system itself. In total it ran for just twenty issues and despite its short life benefitted from the investment Dreamcast owners put into system, reporting strong sales for much of its life.

Did you pick up DC-UK's light and breezy blue skies approach?

The final entry in this thread because, despite how far back this now launched, it is also the last notable magazine launched thanks to the complete collapse of print media in the digital era.

                2002 - gamesTM
Multiformat covering, the magazine was probably most closely alligned to being a less industry courting version of Edge. Only sixteen games were ever given the top score of 10/10 covering releases such as Metroid Prime, God of War II, Bioshock, Demon's Souls, Super Mario Galaxy 2 and GTAV. The magazine ran from 2002 till late 2018 when it was shuttered just over a year after being bought up by Future. It was officially shuttered due to lack of profitability but the magazines heavy similarities to Future's own Edge likely make it a sacrificial axing.

The last good Games magazine or Game Over?

Oh man, I forgot about GamesTM, that was a brilliant magazine.
It was definitely my No.1 games mag choice at that time.

I preferred it to Edge, as a consumer it felt like a slightly warmer alternative

The brilliant but short-lived Arcade not worthy of inclusion?

EDGE unquestionably a better magazine than Games™, IMO.

To hark back to wakka's issue with Famitsu, I feel like Games™ is far more a "What would it look like if Variety did a videogames magazine?" type of publication than Famitsu ever could be.

                            Back for one more round!

                            1998 - Arcade
Burning out like Arcades themselves, despite its name this publication was a multiformat magazine that ran for 22 months in the late 90's. In its relatively brief run it whipped through four Editors before running out of road in October 2000.

Where did Arcade go right and wrong?

                              Wooo!

I think Arcade is my favourite games magazine.

Edge is really good and a grown-up read, but can be a little dry.
C&VG then Mean Machines (I've always preferred consoles to computers) were great growing up, but were probably suffered a bit from hyperbole, which was perfect for my age at the time.

Arcade came out at a good time, around 2000 and as your lovely voting threads of the GOTY around that time, it was a golden age of gaming with the PlayStation finding its second wind with games that utilised the analogue DualShock sticks like Ape Escape, Gran Turismo and Metal Gear Solid. PC gaming was amazing with games like Half-Life, Unreal Tournament and Quake III Arena. The N64 was out and changing gaming with its flagship titles.

I just think the tone of the magazine was just right for my age too. Not quite as cringingly "laddish" as Loaded, but with a sense of humour. I liked the voxpop articles and speaking to people in arcades and stuff.
The couch co-op gaming articles were fun and something we'd done and loved. It was a celebration of videogames, acknowledging they were an important entertainment medium, but also they were just games too. That sweet spot.

I remember loads of games, but not many reviews of games stand out in all the years of reading magazines and websites, but a couple spring to mind - the GamesRadar Lost Planet 2 review and the Arcade magazine Half-Life review.

I think I've got the full set somewhere up the loft apart from one bloody issue!
Pretty sure it's the Colin McCrae issue.
