Just saw it and thought it was average

It just seemed to be one non sensical chase/fight after the other that offered very little closure

The first chase on the rooftops at the start went on for ages and for what? I'd hardly even had ten seconds to familiarise myself with whoever it was bond was chasing.

I'm all for bond being grittier etc, but i'd still like my dose of gadgets and memorable arch enemies

If i want to watch bourne then i'll watch bourne

Sony obviously didn't have anything they wanted to pimp, They could of had a Ps3 fitted in the back of the Bond Girl's Ford KA though.
Or in 007's Hyrdoclean 4x4 Ford

The chase sequence at the start of Casino Royale seemed to work for them, so I guess they didn't think it was worth messing with a successful formula.

I believe the gadgets have been scrapped due to technology pretty much catching up with what they could imagine. Everything can be run, controlled, blown up, found, created via a laptop and/or a mobile phone. So no need for that laser watch anymore sadly.

Does he not drive an invisible car in this one then?

Thankfully not! Jimmbob makes a good point, and I think the invisible car was the culmination of that. A phone and laptop can do most things these days, and in a Bond world grounded in some semblance of reality, you can't really have a pen laser cutting through brick walls.

I think this is the only direction Bond could have gone. We live in a very cynical time, trying to repeat the glories of the older films (gadgets, "big" bad guys, etc) you'd end up being awfully close to Austin Powers.

As I've said, I appreciated the pace to the movie. Assuming your audience has the intelligence to follow the plot was a bold decision; personally I hate exposition. I'm not saying the film couldn't have been better, and a bit of a break here and there to develop the character a bit more would have helped.

Someone told me its down to the absence of a Q type character who works in R and D and may get introduced in the later installments

Seriously, if they EVER consider getting Jim Broadbent to be Q. I will literally kill someone.

The next Q was almost certainly introduced in this film - the guy who has a brief scene in the MI6 Headquarters around the tech table, he's cut off while talking. Looked totally out of place in the context of the film. He'll probably turn in to Q, at least that's the impression I got.

There are forces that pull Judy Dench and Jim Broadbent together in films, plus Broadbent HAS to be in any film that is made in the UK, it's in his contract.
