Bad Lieutenant 2 aka Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans

I really don't know what to make of this. It looks bizarre even by Werner Herzog standards. According to Herzog, it's not a remake or a sequel to Abel Ferrara's controversial 1992 film Bad Lieutenant, it just reuses the title and shares a similar premise about a corrupt cop, but that didn't stop Ferrara from condemning those involved in the new production by saying, "As far as remakes go...I wish these people die in Hell. I hope they're all in the same car, and it blows up!"

It's still my most anticipated film of the year, mainly because of Herzog, a filmmaker who never ceases to fascinate me with his unique way of looking at the world, but also because I'm half-convinced that it's some kind of elaborate hoax. It really wouldn't surprise me if a documentary comes out next year saying, "Hahaha, gotcha!"

Warning - trailer features swearing...and Nicholas Cage!

So are we going to be treated to a tearful Nicholas Cage doing pirhouettes with his willy hanging out?

Maybe that's the plan - momentarily distract us from laughing at his hair.

Watching Nic Cage films in order is like watching a man forget how to act over time

The predictive text feature on Google made me laugh when I was trying to find a UK release date for this. I got as far as typing 'Nicolas Cage Bad...' before Google hit back with 'actor'.

Nic Cage is a mystery to me. I've never really understood why he's so popular, or why he keeps getting work. He's not what I'd classify as typical movie star material. He isn't devilishly handsome, cool, charming, or even funny...at least intentionally, and I have to watch him with my hands placed over my eyes because I'm always afraid of what he'll do next. In that respect, he's a bit like watching Susan Boyle, except he has worse hair. Yet he's remarkably prolific, and always seems to have a new film/train wreck coming out every other week. I just don't get it.

Aye, I can understand that sentiment, it's a difficult film to like. It's a deeply religious film, yet about as far away as you can get from The Shawshank Redemption. Not that Shawshank was a bad film, far from it, but it shares similar themes in an easier to digest package, as is the mainstream Hollywood way. Bad Lieutenant, on the other hand, doesn't shy away from showing how low someone can go, and that's why l think everyone should at least watch it once, if only to witness Harvey Keitel's gut-wrenching performance

Still think this news of a remake, sequel, reimagining, reboot, whatever you want to call it, has got to be some kind of clever stunt. I dunno, something just seems off to me. Everytime I watch that trailer, I want to cry. I mean, it co-stars American rapper Xzibit, so it has to be a joke - a satire on Hollywood's preoccupation with remakes, or something. Even the verbal sparring that's been taking place in the media between Ferrara and Herzog, whilst amusing, doesn't ring true. I've been following the career of Herzog for so long, that I've learnt everything isn't always as it appears, and have faith that there must be some merit in this retelling. I just don't know what it is yet.

Anyway, had no luck in finding a UK release date. The IMDb are reporting that it's still in production, yet mention a few dates scattered around Europe and Argentina for later in the year, so I'm sure Nic Cage can churn out some more crap before this gets its day out in the sun. Oh joy!

I used to hate Nic Cage but after Knowing I started to like him and have now gone and watched a load from his back catalogue. He won an oscar for his performance in Leaving Las Vegas, which is a good film. I have watched stuff like 8mm, the National Treasure films, Gone in 60 seconds, and have Face Off and Snake Eyes ready to watch and Lord of War and Next on order.

I used to avoid these like the plague but I'm now drawn to them. Really strange.

Stop watching Nic Cage films. It only encourages him to make more.

I won't deny that Cage has been in some good films - Wild at Heart, Peggy Sue, Rumblefish, Leaving Las Vegas, Raising Arizona, The Rock, but it doesn't mean that he's any good in them. You could cast nearly any other actor in those roles and they would still be good films, perhaps even better.

I thought he was quite good in Face/Off.

I loved Bad Lieutenant - am still shocked to this day how Harvey didn't win an oscar for it - f**king awesome performance. He is the coolest mofo alive. Check out Fingers if you're a Keitel fan - oh and the Piano - another great Keitel outing.

I saw a preview of this yesterday and I can report that it was miles better than I was expecting. It basically takes the same character from the original (a gambling, drug-fuelled, ****ed-up cop pursuing an atrocious crime) and places it in a new setting with a new actor. And I have to say that it worked really well. It gives a bit more of a backstory as to why he ends up like that and although he is still a bit off the wall at times (this is Nic Cage and Werner Herzog after all!) the character definitely seemed to be less of a psycho than Keitel's version. In fact at times he is quite sympathetic.

I think Nic Cage has done a brilliant job of pissing his career up the wall in the last 10 years, but he is really on form in this and I thoroughly recommend it. After this and Kick Ass he is definitely back on my good list so let's just hope he doesn't do some massive bag of cock next just for the mone...oh wait...I've just seen the trailer for The Sorcerer's Apprentice!
Don't look at me, I'm irrelevant.
