    The Borrowers (Studio Ghibli)

Fairly surprising choice (ie. a book I've actually heard) but it's the kind of quirky story that Ghibli are good at. Can't be worse than the John Goodman Hollywood one.

    Wow, exciting stuff xD

Still haven't seen Ponyo though... is that out on DVD/Blu-ray anywhere yet?

Out on DVD in the new year. Being distributed by Disney, it'll be out on DVD in the US before it hits cinemas in the UK.

I didn't realise Earthsea was a book too, something about it popped up on 1 vs 100 the other night.

My girlfriend said the book was pretty boring too.

Interesting. Must admit though, I didn't enjoy Howl's Moving Castle (the film) that much because it lost a lot of the crazy Japanese mysticism that got me into Ghibli films in the first place. Haven't watched Earthsea or Ponyo yet, but am hoping to catch the latter in the cinema.

Ah, really? I'm absolutely in love with Howl's Moving Castle. It is steadily becoming my favourite Ghibli film, which is saying a lot.

Howl's was enjoyable but flawed, could've done with stricter editing. Ponyo is apparently really good.

Ghibli (and Miyazaki) do take a lot of influence from the West. Kiki's delivery service is based off of a book and Laputa draws influence from a mix of Welsh mining towns and Gullivers Travellers

There's so many scenes in Howl's that just make me want to go back and re-watch it. Most particularly when Sophie has the spell cast on her and her reaction. It's adorable. I love how she wanders around not knowing what to do (and the little trip on the step!)...

I adore Ghibli for their little touches and extraordinary addition to detail, and Howl's Moving Castle is simply bursting with that. It certainly isn't perfect as far as editing, but even the most die-hard Ghibli fan would have to admit not one of the Ghibli films are. Personally, that eccentricity, that not quite fitting in, is a big part of their appeal... Indeed, it is the heart and soul that makes a classic Ghibli

It's not one book, it's a ton of books. One of the problems with that movie is there is too much source material and they condensed it badly.

So is The Borrowers going to be a Hayao Miyazaki movie or have they given it to someone else? If it's Hayao (not his son) then I truly am worried that he's run out of inspiration of his own.

Ponyo was alright but you could see him re-using lots of ideas from his other movies. Wonderful visuals though.

i happened to be staying in the city when ponyo was showing so i got to see it at the cinema. fantastic movie, really enjoyed it. i also really enjoyed howl, it's up there with princess mononoke in my top ghibli films.

not sure about the borrowers though, having seen that movie as well as the old tv show of it when i was a kid. will be interesting to see their take on it.

Came out in Japan on DVD in July and Blu-ray was released in the last couple of weeks.

Normally the derivativeness of anime (the character designs are often hard to distinguish from film to film), and the pared-down animation put me off - but there's something about Studio Ghibli movies that makes me watch regardless. Will definitely see this one.
