Watched a bit of Pirates and I wasn't impressed. It's a clean transfer but nothing special, image still looks pretty flat.

Casino Royale and Planet Earth are still the one to beat.

Is Pirates filtered at all? Is the detail pixel-sharp or blurred? And is there edge enhancement?
I've been assured by the reliable () review sites that it is "perfect"...

Well i dont know about any of this technical stuff but to my eyes they are certainly better then any Blu-Ray or HD-DVD ive watched before they look perfect to me.

I'm gonna watch the first Pirates tonight and i'll give my 2 peneth. I've got the 2nd one coming along with the Descent (thanks to Darrans' recommendation, along with Hi-Def Digest natch).

So far my best PQ blu-ray has been Crank (shame about the movie) followed closely by Casino Royale. Just noticed that 300 is out next month, should be a nice one.

I'm not really up to speed on what exactly makes BD films "good" transfers and what doesn't, but I watched The Corpse Bride on BD in 1080p last night, and to my eyes it was the best thing I've ever seen on my TV.

Agree with you Keith, I thought it was basically as perfect looking as a compressed film on an optical disc could be. That scene with all the neon colours in the dark

I couldn't even go so far as to pick out a scene that I would use to "show off" HD, as the whole film looked amazing to me. I think whenever I invite people round I'll just make them watch it all.

Yeah, shame the movie isn't that great though. If you're looking for a good animated movie on Blu-Ray check out Happy Feet, video quality is amazing and the movie is quite good too.

Was looking round town today at Hi Def stuff and christ it was crazy, X-Men 3 Blu Ray £33 at Virgin Megastore. Were DVD's that kinda price when they first came out.

Also intrestingly Blu Ray sections at Virgin and HMV in York and Sheffield are twice the size of the HD-DVD sections. But id be suprised if anyone bought anything from shops with those prices.

An interesting article indeed and one that I kind of hope goes the way the article describes:

                            "HD-DVD buyers beware!"

Just got Pirates of the Caribbean on BD today. I think it looks very good but, surprise surprise, not "perfect" like some sensationalist reviewers have said (there's a bit of light edge enhancement in there).

Looks very, very good all the same, but the lack of objectivity from reviewers still makes me pissed. Oh, and I still crack up every time Orlando Bloom talks

And, it IS much better than all of the HD DVDs I've seen lately. Better than "The Matrix", no question.
