    Stephen Hawking's Universe

Stephen Hawking's Universe, Channel 4, Saturdays 8:00 PM, available to watch on 4oD.

    Anybody been watching this?

Didn't think much of the first episode which dealt with alien life and the many ways in which it might exist on distant planets. There was a distinct lack of science behind it and I thought anybody's ideas could have created just as good a show and, ultimately, it left me feeling it was a wasted subject when given a rare hour inside one of science's brightest minds.

The second episode, which concentrated on the possibility of time travel, was much better; but I felt he went to too great a length explaining simple laws and concepts which the audience should already know, while skimping on things that needed explaining like why nooks and crannies in time exist.

Also thought it strange how steadfast his belief is in relativity and, in particular, the law which states nothing in the universe can exceed the speed of light. Entangled photons in experiments regularly surpass the speed of light millions of times over but, I don?t know, maybe bizarre stuff in the quantum world doesn't count because it's too weird to know what the hell's really going on but, regardless, the programme was food for thought and served as an interesting glimpse into what the human species might be capable of in the far flung future.

Looking forward to the final episode next weekend which tells the history, present and future of the universe from big bang to the end of time itself.

Saw some of the episodes before, cough. Its very americanised, I much preferred wonders of the solar system - we weren't flying into hawkings eye with the universe within in that one. Its alright I spose. I am waiting for 'Universal' which is D:ream guys 2nd show.

    Space is great!

I know what you mean, the BBC's Wonders of The Solar System with particle physicist Brian Cox was a better programme and far more factual. But still, Hawking raised some fascinating concepts like the way matter effects not only the behaviour of space around it but the behaviour of time too, and how the more massive an object is the more time slows down as it passes over it.

This sounds interesting, I love space docu's.

The description of the episodes sounds exactly like Through the Wormhole btw, a space & time documentary series presented by Morgen Freeman. So if you like this you may want to watch that as well (that's also very american though, Wonders of the Solar System is a lot better).

My only issue with Wonders of the Solar System was Brian Cox on screen every 3 seconds, it was like the cameraman was studying him. Long lingering shots? Pass.

The final 2 hour show last night was excellent. Wasn't much in the way of new information or theories to anyone with a keen interest in physics or cosmology but, still, on a personal level, I find it impossible to watch programmes like this without feeling in awe and having the touchpaper to my imagination lit.

Just taped last night's show, didn't catch any of the other ones as I wasn't sure what it would be like but will give it a watch now.
