Stephen Hawking's Universe, Channel 4, Saturdays 8:00 PM, available to watch on 4oD.
Anybody been watching this?
Didn't think much of the first episode which dealt with alien life and the many ways in which it might exist on distant planets. There was a distinct lack of science behind it and I thought anybody's ideas could have created just as good a show and, ultimately, it left me feeling it was a wasted subject when given a rare hour inside one of science's brightest minds.
The second episode, which concentrated on the possibility of time travel, was much better; but I felt he went to too great a length explaining simple laws and concepts which the audience should already know, while skimping on things that needed explaining like why nooks and crannies in time exist.
Also thought it strange how steadfast his belief is in relativity and, in particular, the law which states nothing in the universe can exceed the speed of light. Entangled photons in experiments regularly surpass the speed of light millions of times over but, I don?t know, maybe bizarre stuff in the quantum world doesn't count because it's too weird to know what the hell's really going on but, regardless, the programme was food for thought and served as an interesting glimpse into what the human species might be capable of in the far flung future.
Looking forward to the final episode next weekend which tells the history, present and future of the universe from big bang to the end of time itself.
