Opening all over the world this weekend, the erotic drama “Fifty Shades of Grey” scored a jaw-dropping debut on both the domestic and global stage. The $40 million-budget film pulled in $81.7 million from Friday to Sunday in the United States, easily trumping the previous President’s Day holiday weekend record-holder “Valentine’s Day” which made $56.3 […]
Fifty Shades makes silly money and very much quietly Big Hero 6 has become the third highest grossing animated Disney movie ever

In the wake of its staggering debut last weekend, it was expected the “Fifty Shades of Grey” movie would see a steep drop-off in the second weekend as the fan base who flocked to its opening days made way for the more regular audience. The steepness though is fairly staggering. ‘Shades’ dropped a whopping 73% […]
Kingsman has held fairly steady in its second week at the US box office whilst Fifty Shades has had a staggering 73% fall in business suggesting a short lifespan and ill tides for the sequel in years to come

It's generally seen as an incredible victory for clever marketing, and as said above, it started life as Twilight fanfiction (as that fanbase started to reach the late teenage age/early 20s).
The actual book is dreadful, and apparently presents the relationship as romantic when it's quite abusive, misrepresenting both healthy relationships and the kinky areas that it goes into.
Then again, we live in a world where Twilight was successful, and everything I see about that suggests that relationship is also stalkerish and creepy. Many hollywood films seem to be doing it these days (and have done since the 80s), portraying things like obsession as romantic. It's not healthy.

Universal opened “Furious 7” in U.S. cinemas on Thursday night and the film’s first night previews took in a whopping $15.8 million – far more than the $6.5 million preview night haul of the previous entry “Fast and Furious 6”. In fact, it’s one of the best preview night openings ever and the best since […]
Fast 7's opening night has ended in over $15m in takings, not far off three times what Fast 6 gained

Fast 7 looks to have taken just shy of another 300m this week which means it is now officially a bigger hit than Frozen over it's entire run (which includes two cinema runs). Expect it to take a hit this coming week as Avengers 2 rolls out, but that film has a very staggered opening so Fast 7 might not be done yet.
It currently stands in a position which makes it almost certain to overtake Harry Potter for 4th place next week and the next film in its sights, holding out of the top three earning films of all time is the first Avengers film.

Disney may end up with more money this time (globally), as these days you have to figure in the Chinese Box Office which is HUGE. Since the last Avengers movie, it has grown exponentially and is now second only to the U.S. and may well overtake it in the coming years. The first Avengers took $86.3 million in 2012 at the Chinese Box Office, but bear in mind that Furious 7 has (so far) taken $323 million this year in the same territory alone, then the potential gross of summer blockbusters is immense in China. So any shortfall (compared to the first movie) at the U.S. cinema, could be more than made up by the takings in China (and other Asian markets).Last edited by Spooky Mulder; 04-05-2015, 15:56.
