The first DVD I ever watched was Mercury Rising with Bruce Willis. It's not the most amazing film, but I wanted to see what the quality difference was like from VHS. I was very skeptical, but when that crisp Universal logo came up on my computer monitor, I was sold.

The other thing I wanted to check out, and part of the reason why I hired Mercury Rising, was that it featured a commentary track from the director. Commentaries have been around since the Laserdisc (Criterion's release of King King was the first, IIRC), but the popularity and accesibility of the cheaper DVD format meant that more film companies started doing them.

Universal were one of the first companies to really embrace the DVD medium and start filling them with commentaries, making-of documentaries and so on, instead of listing "Interactive menus" and "Scene selection" as special features!

The icing on the cake, for me, was when they started doing special editions of John Carpenter's movies and getting him to commentaries on them. The Thing and Escape From New York also feature Kurt Russell and the pair of them have a total blast talking about how the movie was made and their memories from the time.

Wikipedia's list of Universal films is here.

To me it's quite an odd company compared to the other major studios. They've either made or been involved in some of the successful and cherished films ever made and clearly still have a lot of box office success with their newer releases but it's also probably the major studio thats easiest to forget is still making these big films as they make a lot less noise than Disney, Fox, MGM etc. I'm really hoping they get Jurassic Park IV off the ground and do a cinema rerelease for BttF2.

Why did CTN vote for JP3? Surely one of the worst films of all time?

There are worse films, a couple of them are in this list (The Mummy Returns and the Grinch for example).

Plus I think most people actually seem to prefer it to The Lost World.

Yup, as a straight up action film it's not that bad despite not living up to JP1. I'd take it over Lost World anyday.
