The first formal update in nearly six months!
The New Mutants opening weekend and international takings have seen the films first few days bring in $9.9m after it finally saw release following years of delay. The result is a poor one even for Pandemic times and represents the saddest form of closing whimper for the XCU.
Unhinged passed its third weekend by reaching $16m
As Bill & Ted: Face the Music opened to $1.1m which is very low but unlike Mutants, this also launched digitally at the same time making for limited drive in cinema goers to brave their theatres.
The Spongebob Squarepants Movie: A Sponge on the Run built its way to $2.9m in its third week. For comparison the previous film closed with $325m.
Which makes Tenet's launch of $53m all the more one to watch as it's by far the best result in Covid times but so far suggests few films can drag audiences out at the moment and even then it may be projects that cost too much to make a profit.

Second week in and with the US opening for the film...
Tenet made a strong second week push rising to $146m worldwide. The US opening was $20m which isn't that amazing but the wider international push made up more than enough difference to hold well. There is still a very heavy focus on long term box office for this but further releases including Warners own WW84 would limit this and those hopes also ignore the growing reality of a second wave meaning this experiment continues.
The New Mutants managed to double its weak tally to reach $19.9m worldwide.
As Unhinged began to slow down hard reaching $23.6m
Bill and Ted: Face the Music rose to a mere $1.5m worldwide total showing that dual cinema/VOD launches don't seem to work hand in hand. Either that or the film has been a failure across the earnings board.

Third week in and another solid rise for:
Tenet which is now on $201m worldwide. It's domestic takings though slowed down heavily with $29m coming from the States meaning that any upcoming major films will need to write that nation off which is likely why we're seeing the delays we are.
Mulan however sits so far on just $37m worldwide and with word that the Disney+ has faltered it looks like we have a genuine flop here.
The New Mutants had a strangely robust week and jumped up to $29m
And Bill & Ted: Face the Music almost doubled its earnings to reach $2.9m

Disney have delayed the releases of Free Guy and Death on the Nile and are now without opening dates. The move now means that Wonder Woman 1984 is the only major film left on the release schedule for 2020, a film that is all but assured a significant delay imminently.
With that out of the way it will mean that all eyes turn to the 2021 which is now itself beginning to look increasingly shakey for the first half of the calendar. The first films that eyes will be watching to move are:
15 January 2021 - Mortal Kombat
15 January 2021 - Peter Rabbit 2
12 March 2021 - Raya and the Last Dragon
19 March 2021 - Morbius
Two of those films come from Sony Pictures who to date have been keen on No VOD Releases and Early and Severe Delays as strategies so expect quick and long delays on both soon.

Opening to $38.5m worldwide Wonder Woman 1984 has once again shown Warner Bros. predicament by showcasing there is no path to profitability for tentpole films short of heavy long-term delays post-pandemic.
Whilst the next US aid package might manage to save the US cinema industry

As COVID rumbles on so does Sony's happiness to delay its films rather than opt for any other approach. Boss Baby 2: Family Business has now been delayed till 17 September 2021.

Wonder Woman 1984 continues its slow run seeing the global tally drag itself to $131.4m amidst mass theatre shut downs.
Whilst The Croods: A New Age slows down reaching $127.8m
Both films still have a long run ahead of them though at open cinemas as the next release lined up for cinemas is Sony's Peter Rabbit 2 which is already a year delayed and very highly likely to be heavily delayed once again. If that happens then Tom and Jerry is the next theatrical release set to launch on 26 February 2021

Sunday AM Writethru: Updated with NYC B.O. data While Disney‘s animated release of Raya and the Last Dragon led the weekend box office with $8.6M at 2,045 theaters, the movie’s less than stellar result has left agita in the bellies of many exhibition and studio executives. Read on. Raya‘s start is 41% below last weekend’s $14.1M […]
Raya and the Last Dragon has raised red flags as it is set to open to just $8m in the US. The cinema scape there is opening in New York but still looking dire as the film is well behind Warners Tom and Jerry movie that opened last week to over $14m.
Catching up with cinemas big films two months later:
Wonder Woman 1984 has fought its way up to $161.38m worldwide
Whilst The Croods: The New Age has evolved to $156m
