I can't speak for the UK as I don't have experience but paying for ad free YouTube and higest quality Netflix here in Japan is way cheaper and better content than any cable or satellite service we have available.

I feel like we're entering the dark age of streaming now. Streamers are realising (not that it wasn't blindingly obvious) that there are reasons the ad-supported model was prevalent for so many years. The model they tried so hard to kill is now the one they see as their saviour and, in the process, we may end up getting the worst of all worlds.

Did they try to kill it? Their aim was surely to kill off the competition, especially traditional, broadcast TV.

This is the Uber strategy: drive down labour rights and push out the competition until you’re in a monopoly position and then you can raise prices (or increase revenue through advertising).

Meanwhile the govt is doing them a favour by laying into the BBC. No happy accident, streamers will be lobbying for this approach and the govt don’t give a **** about anything except the super rich.

You’re of course right that killing competition was at the core but that’s arguing terminology. They were gunning for that traditional model and selling a new dream. And it was a beautiful dream for consumers but some of us in the industry knew it was flawed from day one.
