Given this is having chunky reshoots it'd be interesting to know if they reflect the fact Disney will be undoubtedly killing this canon. This film has such a rotten concept from the outset too, we're so far from First Class now...
The Xmen Films seem to have a strange love affair with the Phoenix Force and they keep returning to it completely unnecessarily. There are so many other characters and story lines they could use.
I don't really care for this film at all.
Even if the franchise wasn't in terminal decline, the idea of an entire movie hanging on Sophie Turner's acting winds all hope from me. GoT has showcased some great actors... but they were all great before it, the fresh faces... well...
Though the Disney and Fox merger won’t be complete until well into 2019, 20th Century Fox is not stopping development of its Channing Tatum-led “Gambit” film with a recent report indicating filming will begin in February in New Orleans – one day after the release of “X-Men: Dark Phoenix” on Valentine’s Day next year. ‘Dark […]

So Gambit has cool powers where he can give objects kinetic charge, causing them to explode or enhance their strength. He also has a lot of charm and the cool cajun accent which makes him popular with women. Why would anyone want to reduce the character to romantic comedy fodder when his premise allows for a pretty interesting story to be told? (you can make it a part of the film but don't make it the bloody focus).
Who knows though? They might make a decent job of it after all.

It sounds like it could be a disaster, but it's better than their previous idea, which was going to be a casino heist movie.
Whilst I get how it could work, given Gambit's character, heist movies tend to be an interplay of the character clashes of the thieves offset by their cleverness to overcome the obstacles involved in the heist; dealing with the security cameras, breaking into the vault, etc.
Ocean's X wouldn't be so entertaining if the mutants rock up to the casino, then sleep-man puts all the guards to sleep, lock-breaker-woman opens the vault, can-carry-loads-of-money-man... You get the idea.
It might have worked if they got a load of mutants with powers totally unsuitable for thievery and somehow wrangled that into a successful heist, but I had little faith in that being the case.
The project has been a disaster since day one, always struggling for a reason to exist because it was born from one Fox exec having a crush on Tatum back when we was the popular thing. It's limped on ever since and now the film would be fighting to establish him, the character, its world and plot under the knowledge it would lead to nothing as Marvel culls everything but Deadpool.
I do get the whole 'carry on until the deal is done' factor with the Disney deal but I'll remain staggered if camera's ever roll on this, especially given the double whammy smackdown to the franchise name Dark Phoenix and New Mutants seem primed to give.
It would be funny if it was Fox's plan to make two absolute shower of **** X-Men films to kill the franchise and leave a sour taste in peoples mouths so Disney struggle to reboot it due to loss of appetite.
