Surprised. I thought one of the major plans was to make a movie about Redd, the female pirate captain who is very prominent in the actual Pirates of the Carribbean ride. I figured that'd be a shoe-in because Disney loves a GIRL-BOSS^TM story these days.

There's still supposed to be a spin-off on that idea but the franchise just keeps getting battered around. I think the issue is that most who still care about the franchise left on the note of the cliffhanger that promised a final entry with Davey Jones return and that's the film they want. The studio lacks the confidence to make an entry with Depp but also the confidence to make one without him given the cost so with Disney's new found wariness of having more flops the property just keeps spinning its wheels.

The real answer is just to make that final entry with Jack back in a Pirates 1 capacity and use it to launch non-Jack entries. We're long past the industry backing up Heard now.
