There really needs to be a word to describe how you can totally accept a work of fiction, but get hung up on one minor aspect, like saying it's unrealistic that everyone except Venkman getting covered in marshmallow, but not being bothered about y'know a giant marshmallow avatar for Gozer the Destructor.

That one's easy, he hid behind the others - you know he would

I have no trouble with being hung up on something despite the overall context of a film/programme.

Like, you can’t just have everyone in LotR floating around defying gravity simply because there are elves pottering about.

Yeah, but I mean something really mundane that's not worth getting hung up about, but it's all you can think about, like in the fight in Balin's tomb chamber in Moria, the cave troll comes in contact with the beam of sunlight entering the chamber. In Middle Earth lore, trolls are supposed to turn to stone when they are hit with sunlight.

          So...

The wife and I watched Kaleidoscope (2022 via Netflix) and really enjoyed it.
The basic premise is that it's a heist series, but the twist is that the episodes can be viewed in any order.
The first (black) and last (white) are always fixed, but the others are randomised.
Ultimately I was a little deflated because the heist is as successful as Reservoir Dogs, rather than Ocean's 11, but it was interesting to see how it unfolded.

I also started suffering from PTSD in the heist when I got flashbacks to robbing the casino in GTA Online!

Based on all the talk currently I've started watching Happy Valley from series 1. It's actually really good. I raced through S1 and that's the first time I've binged anything in ages. There's something great about that moist, Yorkshirey setting too.

              Cabinet of Curiousities: Season 01
Or as we came to know it, Cabinet of Mediocrities. Guillermo Del Toro's new series is a horror anthology of eight stories presented in a kind of Twilight Zone/Cryptkeeper manner. The man himself introduces each story and its director and sets the tone for the episode. It's clear they were an inspiration but out of the gate the show swings and misses in its delivery. Whilst some elements look good, some look straight up early 1990's and Del Toro is absolutely awful at presenting the introductions. He's clearly not in great physical condition and has no acting skills at all so the intro's veer from hard to understand to uncomfortable, just flat even when things are straightforward. Then you get a rough 45 minute story. The issue out the gate is that the stories are frankly middling to weak and whilst there's some notable casting it ultimately fails before it begins because the run time is nowhere near enough to generate any sense of investment, horror or satisfying outcome, all too often falling on lazy tropes or just being odd for odds sake. If anything, it's a bit of a knock to Del Toro's horror credentials that he's tied his name so strongly to such a weak show. Netflix still hasn't decided on a second run, to be honest, they shouldn't bother.

                Locke & Key: Season 03
It's amazing how some shows just run out of steam so quickly. Whilst the second season was a weaker run it wrapped up a lot of plot points so served a purpose, the final season only really has one relating to a weak villain still hanging around so heavily feels like padding to a predictable finale.

                Gangs of London: Season 02
There's plenty wincing moments of violence in this run which lacks the touch of Evans directing but overall is very solid. The biggest negative with it is probably that the melodrama is quickly taking over with Fast and Furious level plot developments starting to occur. It's a very enjoyable run but it leaves you feeling the third should be the last.

Some proper "yikes" moments in this season!
The bit at the karaoke bar where grabs a mic stand, hooks it around a guy's head and smashes his head through a window, then drags his neck across the shards of glass remaining in the bottom of the window frame?

Can't remember everything I've watched lately but we did just finish watching both seasons of The White Lotus. It seems to have had a decent amount of critical praise, and while it's watchable I can't say I was particularly impressed with any of it. I don't know if showing that filthy rich people can be terrible was supposed to be some kind of exposé, but none of it was particularly surprising - it kind of reminded me of Succession in this regard, which is another one that seems to split opinions. Also I really, really do not like the title music.

The Last of us, Kicked off with a feature length episode last night, it's uncanny how closely tied into the game they have kept things extending background where needed and bringing in a decent cast. Bella Ramsey I'm not sold on yet, we didn't see too much of her so i'm not sure how shes gonna pan out, I'm sure shes a great actor but I'm really not sold on her as Ellie yet as she just comes across as massively different to Ellie in the games.

What did make me laugh was

How they cut off Joel and his brother in the opening part, blocking the alley with a car for some proper corridor based action. It was right out of Naughty dogs playbook of "we need you to go this way, so that ways blocked now"

Yep, watched the opener of The Last of Us last night and enjoyed it. Whilst I get the vibe that the massive RT scores are as hyperbolic as the games reception it is an incredibly well made adaptation that seems to be very faithful with only required changes made.

I think where the Last of us Stands out is at its center its a story focusing on the human side of a zombie apocalypse, It reminded me of the good parts of early walking dead but a bit more realistic in how people are surviving, embellishing elements about the military rule with executions for minor transgressions is exactly how id see most community's surviving and being kept alive if this where a real scenario.

People really like to **** on the walking dead but it was a great show at its start, maybe a bit cheesy and over acted in places, so for a show to come along do the overdone zombie trope and make it feel new and fresh deserves to get the hype. It helps that the story was really good to begin with too, I'm just glad we avoided another terrible video game tie in, this could of very easily been as bad as any of the Resident Evil adaptions and i was expecting the worst.

Definitely, I'm very pleased that the one season covers the entire game rather than aim to drag things out. I could imagine Season 02 will deal with Ellie's story in Part II whilst Season 03 would be Abby's side which might give ND enough time to release The Last of Us Part III providing enough material to close the show at a consistent standard over 5 runs rather than TWD which became almost like a parody of itself thanks to being milked so hard.

Great first ep of The Last of Us. Feels like they got so much right. Pedro Pascal is great as Joel.

Enjoying the run of Lucifer on 5USA - currently up to Series 3/Ep.8.

Very welcome alternative Sunday evening TV - the concept is a weird one but the whole thing somehow just works, bridging several genres and almost impossible to categorise.
