Cat O Nine Tails - I don't think this is anyone's favourite Argento film ... but it's a classic murder mystery with enough style and giallo flavour to make it worth a look.

The Ring (Japanese)
My wife had never seen this so we watched it last night.
The actress who plays the film’s first victim passed away a few days ago. Spooky!
The film itself is very good and it creeped us out a lot. Also, we've been to both the Izus mentioned in the film(Shizuoka and Oshima).
Netflix has Spiral(which I've never seen or even knew about until yesterday!), The Ring 2(which I didn't like the first time) and Ring 0(which I really liked). We'll go through those soon enough.

Finally got round to watching Baby Driver last night. Once the rhythm and the visuals clicked I was hooked ... so pretty much from the very start Thoroughly enjoyable film.

Universal Soldier
Jean Claude Van Damm is a soldier who died in Vietnam, but was resurrected as part of a team of robotic super-soldiers by a secret rogue US military project. He's a Poundland Robocop, essentially, joined by a handful of other Poundland Robocops, who get driven around in what can only be described as a sort of battle bus with a secret lab inside it, dealing with terrorist threats and so forth.
But when Van Damme escapes and begins to reclaim his humanity, fellow Rent-A-Robocop Dolph Lundgren is on his tail - and not just because he hates slackers (although you get the impression he very much does) but because both men have history back in Nam before they got cyborgified.
This film is incredibly fun to watch. There are numerous explosions, hand to hand fights, people firing large-scale artillery at each other and buildings (motels, petrol stations, cars), and lots of terrible, terrible quips.
After watching it, I viewed the alternate ending on the Blu-ray. It's pretty bizarrely different and was obviously the original ending in the script, before the studio wanted a more cheerful one. It makes more sense honestly, although it does leave you on a bit of a bum note for a film which is otherwise a smorgasbord of explosions, car chases, and exchanges like:
Dolph: Say goodbye, asshole
JCVD: Goodbye, asshole
Highly recommended schlock.Last edited by wakka; 28-09-2020, 11:26.

Casino Royale - I thought I'd seen this but I hadn't. I grew up with Bond films on the telly but never really bothered after the Roger Moore era. Last one I saw at the cinema was Goldeneye and I thought it was pants ... just ticking Bond boxes, not authentic, and definitely not as good as the video game. Fast forward to now and I was blown away by Casino Royale. What a brilliant film ... a brilliant Bond film. Great action, lines, story, characters, the lot. Didn't mind that I hadn't seen it on the big screen either ... Bond was always a sofa watch for me. Loved it. So I was eager to watch the next Daniel Craig one.
Quantum of Solace - This was disappointing. I knew it reviewed badly but I was in such a Bond mood I was determined to enjoy it despite what the snotty critics might have said, but it was a shadow of Casino Royale. Similar to the Goldeneye experience it felt like just an action film with a couple of Bond boxes ticked ... I guess that's part of what happens when you run out of books but it could have and should have been so much better after CR. Also, the action suffered from Greengrass-itis, cutting all over the place, hammering you with so much info you don't know what's going on. Very poor. Bond shouldn't copy Bourne. Reading about it afterwards it looks like they arrived at the writer's strike at precisely the wrong time ... but went ahead and made it anyway. Big mistake. Big shame. Still, Skyfall next.

Parasite
Second viewing of this and it only got better. I think it's actually one of my favourite films.
I'm not going to bother to summarise the plot because really, anyone who hasn't seen it should just go in cold. This film exhausts superlatives. Here are a few which apply to it:
Tense
Funny
Dark
Profound
Clever
Beautiful
Innovative
If you haven't seen it, just go and watch it please. And if you have the equipment, get the UHD on import from the US. It's an absolute banger of a 4K disc.
EDIT: I've just realised none of those are actually superlatives. Whatever, you get the idea. It's good.Last edited by wakka; 29-09-2020, 13:14.
