Movie 05 - Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire
The franchise moved back to New York for the latest entry with the new cast working with the original cast as a new threat risks bringing an ice age born of sheer fear. The film tried to blend the two casts, driving things in a bit more of a Real Ghostbusters direction whilst still containing a heavy dose of nods to the previous entry and the original films. The film held steady in popularity though reviews were more strained due to how cramped the cast was.

Did you like the direction of the latest entry?

Nope. I really thought and still think a lot of the new cast was just a waste of space.
Podcast = no point, shouldn't be in the movie. Lucky = no point, shouldn't be in the movie. Trevor = should have been give a more substantial role. The Firemaster = not funny and annoying having him as a main character.

The film would have been much better having the Ghostbusters come up with a way to defeat the new enemy utilising the powers of the fire girl ghost Phoebe is friends with.
A slightly darker tone would have worked well too when it came to the serious sections. Like the battle with Goza in the first movie. That was frighting yet still had room for comedy.

I think that taps into my line of thining too. People complained about the old cast being around but it genuinely makes sense that they are. Podcast, Trevor and Lucky were very much the definition of characters only being present because they were in the prior entry and it felt - particularly for Podcast and Lucky - hugely forced that they were present.

A loved the opener for this one though

I thought it failed to deliver on any promise that Afterlife set up. It could have gone a couple of different directions and it tried to do both. I could get into details but its biggest crime was that it was just pretty dull. Nothing seemed to matter.

The opener was particularly good I though. Set a good tone that kind of got lost as the movie progressed.

Yep, the opener was nice because it was a nice scene that felt in tone but also felt different from the previous films. The rest of the film is very safe and I guess much of that comes down to the studio listening too much to the portion of fans who, after Afterlife, were clamouring for a traditional 'New York' entry. The issue there though is that you just can't make a GB1-2 toned entry in 2020+ so it ended up being something that fell in the middle. The next one definitely needs to start moving away from the Spengler Family set up if they want to keep to New York

Didn't catch the last entry. Didn't hate the rebooty one, but I lost momentum with it, which is pretty telling.
