Help. TV series (film?) with VR Game Single Life

Help. Vague recollection of a show that had a VR game. You were only allowed one life and then that was it. No more play (ever, I think?). I'm not convinced that it was a massive part of the plot but it was not just an aside.

Nope. Much more recent than that. Maybe round the time of Fringe

I think the main character gets given a coin that lets him play or some other way to enter the game. It's all very underground (opposite of Ready player one which is a global thing). There's a girl that shows him the ropes. He has to survive because he needs to get information from someone that is only available in the game (no one knows who he is outside of the game), for whatever his own quest is.....Can't remember.
