To be fair, I was struggling with ideas for the next film, so I guess being set in the past might be interesting.

You won't have those sweet JDF laser cannons though!

Takashi Yamazaki got the gig after this sequence in Always: Sunset on Third Street 2:

They'll probably steer it in the direction again of directing another monster to battle Godzilla but the idea of a WWII era tech design for Mechagodzilla is screaming to be done

We reach the end point for this run with the final planned film in the Godzilla legacy as things currently stand:

Film 39 - Godzilla And Kong
The fifth entry into the Monsterverse line of films was greenlit following the success of GvK and will once again unite the two characters. Kong rules the underground world whilst Godzilla still waits in the sea as a new threat emerges tied to the history of monsters and Skull Island causing them both to return to fend off the new enemy.

From the same makers of the previous entry, is a direct follow up the right move for the franchise?

Yeah, just read that on Wikizilla:
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (ゴジラxコング 新たなる帝国,   Gojira Kongu: Aratanaru Teikoku)[a] is a 2024 American science fiction monster film directed by Adam Wingard and written by Terry Rossio, Simon Barrett, and Jeremy Slater from a story by Rossio, Wingard, and Barrett, with visual effects by Alessandro Ongaro. Produced by Legendary Pictures, which also co-financed it with Warner Bros.,[1] it is the fifth Hollywood-produced Godzilla film and 38th Godzilla film overall, as well as the fifth film in the Monsterverse. It is a direct sequel to the 2021 film Godzilla vs. Kong and stars Rebecca Hall, Bryan Tyree Henry, and Kaylee Hottle, who reprise their roles from that film, as well as Dan Stevens, Alex Ferns, Fala Chen, and Rachel House, who play original characters. The film made its world premiere at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles, California on March 25, 2024.[11] Warner Bros. released it to wider American theaters on March 29,[12] and Toho brought it to Japanese theaters on April 26.[3][13]

          I dunno, man.

I love some of Adam Wingard's stuff like You're Next and The Guest, but GvK was a swing and a miss for me.

Just sounds like they're retconning their stories to say they both fought Ebirah or something in their past and now they must unite to declaw him.

I imagine that more of the same is definitely what the next film will end up delivering on. I imagine that they struggle with planning a long term outlook for the franchise as they would not only be battling the typical sequel decline in demand but also that ultimately Godzilla films are typically repetitive in nature. Given that they already struggled to maintain their profit margins the US franchise almost lucked out as I could imagine that King of the Monsters would have been the final film had GvK not have already been in the can. That it merged the two recognisable creatures in a fairly mindless action fest piece of escapism post-lockdown was effectively a bit of blind luck so switching to greenlighting them on a one by one nature and focusing on spectacle seems like the easy decision execs would make. I can't imagine we'll see anything remotely resembling the 2014 film again.

I feel like there is potential to make a better Godzilla and Kong film than the last one. But it’s not necessarily the film I want. Still, I’ll watch it!

Few thoughts on the modern Kong vs Godzilla we got, it seemed the last few, despite some fantastical elements in KOTM, were fairly based in reality...come KvG and we've got hollow earth, anti gravity flying cars etc, it was a bit silly. Fun in places, but a step back from the previous film.

I watched Godzilla Vs. Mothra (1996) for the first time since I had a VHS 📼 player hooked up!

Still think fighting moths are lame, but there were some fantastic sets getting mashed up.
Loved it when G tried to blast the Cosmo Clock Ferris wheel 🎡 (Yokohama) on top of Mothra, but Battra catches it and dumps it on Godzilla's bonce.

                  Some ridiculous lines.
"MOTHra is entering its larval stage."
                  "LARVAL STAGE?!"
Like it's the first time a caterpillar has ever made a cocoon.
