Hopefully they announce a stremaing date soon, so daft that WB has kept it blocked for GxK's sake when in reality they'd probably help each other more than hinder given they wouldn't be at cinema at the same time

Away with the kids for the week, so we watched:
Frozen II
Not seen this since the cinema and it was lovely to rediscover. No "Let It Go", but still some great songs, especially "Lost in the Woods", which is like a boyband video.
The plot seems ridiculously neat and retcons some stuff in the first film, but with such a fun cast of characters, it really doesn't matter.
D.A.R.Y.L.
I've not seen this for yonks, probably the same age as my son now! I still bloody love it. I know some of the "tech" is ancient now, but it's still a lovely film. I think what makes it work is the balance between all the characters. Obviously Daryl is great and played really well, but it's how he interacts with his foster parents, his friends and his "real" parents and they respond to him that makes it work.
Then, of course, there's that amazing scene where he steals the SR-71 and there's this lovely Firefox-lite sequence. I'm guessing it uses a similar effect but it still looks lovely.
You can buy the actual model for a mere $9K!
Spies in Disguise
Wicky wah wah Will Smith and Tom Holland team up when Smith's super secret agent gets accused of being a double-agent and gets turned into a pigeon with Holland's experimental formula.
This was more fun that I expected and was chuckling throughout. I think all kids who see this now know what a cloaca is.

The new John Woo movie Silent Night. The no speaking gimmick aside it didn't feel like a Woo film except the one bit where Kid Cudi does his best Chow Yun Fat impression with dual pistols. Apart from that there was some ok action, I did like how he wasn't just a superman and had to learn ****. Some of that was good. Acting, yeah not sure Joel has the acting chops to pull off the no speaking gig. The climax was rubbish and hardly worth the effort. Overall not a very satisfying movie, I yearn for olden days Woo.

Saw the worst film with the best actors I've seen in ages: The Lost City on C4 or Film 4 (Saturday - likely being repeated on Freeview some time this week too).
Desperately trying to be a 21st century Romancing The Stone type comedy adventure it stinks in every department despite the presence of Sandra Bullock, Brad Pitt and Channing Tatum. I had to take a break in the middle to watch Match Of The Day before finishing it on the +1 channel and I honestly wish I hadn't bothered.

Oppenheimer
Took a long time and finally got there. Nolan films often fall into two camps for me: Smaller in scale and hype and stronger end results versus larger in scale and hype and and end result that is hugely overrated and borderline naff.
I enjoyed this, Nolan for me is always much stronger with grounded films where there's a clear story that isn't dependent on anything convoluted or character orientated. It's why I liked Dunkirk, he's not trying to be smarter than he is with it and is able to just focus on a clear objective. This is similar, it's not really his story he's telling and has something to work from and despite the three hour run time he's clearly trying to cover as many years as he can. It's impressive that it moves like the clackers, at no point did it feel like it dragged. By the same token I feel the usual complaints still apply enough to question why audiences went so nuts for it outside of the Barbie meme. To call the 'characters' two dimensional would be doing them an overstatement, you learn almost nothing about almost everyone here which includes the weirdly awkward role Pugh plays in the film as one of the closest relationships Oppenheimer ever had is reduced to Pugh having her top off in nearly all her scenes. But I kind of let that side slide because again it's on the side of filmmaking that Nolan sucks at so it's to be expected. Overall succesful enough at what it does, it would have probably worked better if it had been a series to give it more room to breath and also if it didn't pull its punches when it comes to the bomb which robs it of an atomic ton of impact but decent enough.

Monkey Man (via the cinema)
Dev Patel's revenge flick, which I really enjoyed. Engaging character and story that borrows heavily from classic kung-fu tropes, but is interesting in this new setting.
Bit bonkers that I think it was set to hit Netlfix and got dropped then Jordan Peele stepped in and got it a cinema release.
I have to point out that there's a bit of shakeycam, but I'll allow it in the context that at the start, he's a scrappy fighter and it's only after he trains (in a brilliant training montage) that the camera feels to be a bit more steady, showing he's more in control.
Doesn't change that I'm not a massive fan of the technique and some bits were hard to follow from the combination of blurring, tight shots and jumpy action, especially at the start.
It's an amazing accomplishment, though and Patel is the director, star, writer, caterer and key grip or something on this action film made during Covid.
It made me want to go home and play Streets of Rage or Sifu.
Lovely interview:

Leathal Weapon 1
Yet another movie that could be classed as a Christmas movie.
Man, I hadn't seen this in years but it still holds up very well indeed. The introduction to each character is short and sweet. You really feel for the heroes as well as understanding their relationship.
In many modern films I just don't feel connected with the main characters, they're just someone I'm watching but not so in Leathal Weapon.
Next week, Leathal Weapon 2 👍

That use of "Roxanne" though was very bad. Bloody hell how did no-one convince him to cut that.
I did laugh for reals in the lift bit - it was Boney M?

It's a lot shorter than I remembered with teens getting dispatched pretty quickly.
I was the same when watching The Hunger Games - loads of people love it, but I was wondering if these people had seen Battle Royale or Soylent Green, whilst trying not to get a headache from the shakeycam action...
Me eyes, man!
