Agreed would have liked more comedy but it was following the manga so i can forgive it as it was above average at worst also sometimes centred on bits that the manga sometimes just brushed over like Sasa's job stuff and the rant at him, also his sister totally disappears from the anime,

p.s. Ogiue voice is just so damned sexy

That's true, actually. Does his sister appear again in the manga? I really must get round to reading all the volumes I've bought.

        I hear that.

The one thing I loved is the way they seemed to slot the new characters in with ease. Okay it started in the OVAs but they all just fit so well together. It's almost like they were there from the start. I don't usually get that with some shows, where I usually prefer the more established characters.

I just finished a Genshiken marathon as well, both seasons infact. I was a bit confused about how Kuchiki and Ogiue were just there with no explanation but then I realised there were 3 OVAs between the seasons. I still haven't seen those yet, hopefully they explain more.

Love the series, as I said before it's a shame I missed it in 2004, I wasn't in the anime society at uni anymore but my housemate was still running things (I think) and she'd have loved it. I like it more than H&C because of the characters being more "loserish" and it being far less cuddily, dreamy and pastelly coloured. H&C strikes me as being slice of life for girls whereas Genshiken (particularly season 1) is slice of life for boys.

Prefer season 1 overall, I was expecting to prefer season 2 after reading about it focusing on character development more but I prefer the characters in season 1. I loved the episode where Madarame and Kasukabe were alone in the clubroom. I've had moments exactly like this, even the imagining of how the conversation could be going. His physical movements were exagerated but needed to perfectly portray the crazy stuff that goes on in your head. He also made me realise I'm not as socially crippled as I used to be/think I still am as I wouldn't have been that uncomfortable with someone like Saki, especially if I'd been used to her for a year. I also liked the episode with the 2 new members, the one that wasn't Kuchiki looked exactly like me when I was in the anime soc, I went off him after he revealed how trendy he really was though.

Wasn't happy to see Kuchiki back in season 2, I didn't like him at all but I'm sure that's how I'm meant to feel about him. I suppose the OVAs explain how he ends up finall joining? I never warmed to Ogiue either, I wasn't sure why she bothered even coming since she acted so cold to everyone. I loved her yaoi fantasies though, how she was having them while sitting there and how they were drawn themselves. I can just imagine if this were a US sitcom how the supposedly geeky characters would look like her version. I wasn't completely taken with Ohno either, just found her hard to get to know, maybe a repeat viewing would change that.

I'd have liked to have seen a glimpse of Saki's social life, I can't believe she only hung out with her boyfriend's club all those years. I think there could have been some good comedy in the differences between other friends she would have had and her embarassment in the two mixing. I think Kousaka would have had other friends as well. I liked their relationship though, my last one was a bit like that in that I was totally oblivious to how much my girlfriend was into me at the beginning. We even had moments where I was more distracted by the TV than I should have been She was at least into my interests though. My housemate's relationship was a bit more like theirs in that respect: she was trying to go out of her way to get into his interests more. Kousaka should have grown as a character in this way I think and gotten to understand her more instead of just the other way around.

Found it upsetting to see everyone having to move on at the end of season 2. This is probably because I'm so unsatisfied with my life after leaving my circle of friends in my uni town. I definitely feel as useless as Sasahara and his story has a happy ending.

I did find the speed of time passing hard to follow, I've found other series the same so this show isn't alone there. I love how time does pass unlike US shows but it's hard to get a feel that the characters have known each other for a whole year only have a season. It probably doesn't help that I watched the episodes back to back, and the manga was published over more time but I'd have prefered that much material to only have been a years worth

Anyway, I still have the OVAs to see and to get hold of the manga that carries on past the anime.

If anyone has any more slice of life recommendations I'd love to hear it.

I too am a whore for slice of life anime. Off the top of my head, Planetes and Paradise Kiss have been great to watch.

Planetes is about a group of rubbish collectors in space after dumping there is made illegal. Wonderful characters with development and animation, I don't know many who disliked it after having seen it.

Paradise Kiss is about a wannabe model who meets a bunch of eccentric fashion design students and gets caught up in a whole bunch of their antics. This show actually followed Honey and Clove season 1 when it finished so in some ways shares many similarities in its themes. Only 12 episodes too so very easy to run through.

Ahhhh Paradise Kiss and Planetes are really good,

Aria the ****(fill in blank Animation, Natural, Arietta, Origination), big fan of Akari and co gondoliering antics, just gives of such a lazy and releaxing vibe even though in alot of episodes nothing much gets done than meeting up and exploring Neo-Venezia(Venice-remade on a terraformed mars)

Nana - more drama then slice-of-life, but its in the same mold as Paradise Kiss but features a rock band trying to make it big.

I would say Lucky Star goes with that to, older stuff like azumanga and niea under 7, Wings of Honneamise. I'll have to look back at my collection see what else there is but this i can remember of the top of my head.

Thanks for the recommendations, I've seen some of them already, should have mentioned stuff I've already seen

                * Nana - Huge favourite, not because it's about music but I really like the characters.

                * Paradise Kiss - started the manga, then watched all of the anime, I should go back and finish the manga since it has a different ending. I like it but the characters had to grow on me, they weren't instantly likeable.

                * Neighbourhood Story (Gokinjo Monogatari) - prequel to Paradise Kiss, I saw this about 8 years ago and only rediscovered it recently. Only 6 episodes of the anime were subbed but I've since read all the manga.

                * Honey & Clover - It's very dreamy looking, I was suprised my old housemate didn't get into it since I thought it was way more her style than mine. The characters might be a bit soft for my tastes, I like them with a bit more darkness. Time moved way too fast for me with this one.

*Nodame Cantibille - Is a bit dreamy as well and Nodame is the kind of character that would usually annoy me but I think she works brilliantly with the rest of them. The end of the anime almost moved me to tears. Almost. Time also moved a bit too fast.

                * Lucky Star - Seen about half of it, it's good but I'm in the mood for more depth.

                * Welcome to the NHK - Not sure if this counts because of it's storyline but I like the subject matter and characters a lot.

*The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya - I know this doesn't count at all but I like the relaxed moments of them all hanging out in the clubroom.

Looks like I've seen more than I thought! Maybe there's not much to recommend, maybe older stuff is better since I've most likely seen way more new stuff than old. I'll look into the ones you guys mentioned.

I don't get Paradise Kiss at all. I'll admit it may be down to me using 5 second skip on a lot of it or maybe just the thought process behind how it was made but I just didn't like it at all.

Slice of life, hmm. I can think of the obvious ones like Nodame and Honey and Clover but nothing else. A ot of the other series I can think of are in grey areas like Mushi-shi, Hidamari Sketch and Ichigo Mashimaro.

Edit: Oh and of course there's the upcomming Wolf and Spice anime this month.

How much did you try of Paradise Kiss? It took me a while to sink into it, none of the characters came across as likeable straight away to me but I enjoyed it in the end.

Not sure what to make of the sound of Wolf and Spice, it sounds dodgy on paper but it also sounds like it might be much better than it sounds (that's a weird sentence) so I'll be giving it a go.

I should broaden my search for recommendations I didn't realise how much of the slice of life genre I'd already seen till I typed it out. I'm in the mood for something like a drama, a dark storyline, something realistic (no magic or robots), romance can be involved but preferably not the main focus.

Give boxtorrents.com a try, though they do have a strict upload as much as you download policy if I recall.

I put Minami-ke and Lucky Star on my PS3 hard drive now the little bugger can play Divx files just to see what the quality was like.

Whoah!! Minami-ke looks amazing on my TV. Lucky Star is pretty incredible to look at also.

When's the "other" series of Minami-ke out? I seem to recall that another studio was working on their own take of the manga. They're going to have to do something pretty special to top the first one.

Still holding out for a Yotsuba-to anime adaption. Been rewatching Azumanga recently and it gives me this amazingly content feeling. That was a really special series!

Rosario+Vampire ep1 - really enjoyed this, reminded me of karin alot

except with the roles being reversed with human in a monsters school, add with that a panty shot every other scene and the standard super robot power up noise when she transforms .

H20 ep1 - well that was certainly a different way to start a h-game romance/comedy show.... seems it'll be quite dark and his

blind gimmick seems to have only lasted 1 episode, but the 'spirit' did say it was short lived. Interesting anyway and a good replacement for Myself;Yourself and EF:memories.

Tsubasa toyko ep1 - i should have noticed sooner it was more tsubasa chronicles, never got into season1, avoided season2 but enjoyed XXXholic for what was subbed of it, tsubasa fans would eat this up but its not for me.
