    18 teams

Rocball?s preseason practice games continue at night with 21 point games, winner stays, losers leave, and a new team comes in for a practice game. The regular season starts on Oct, 13th with 18 teams challenging each other from 12 noon to 8:00 pm. All schedule changes and rosters will be finalized by Tuesday night Oct 10th

On Tuesday, the Naturals played there second preseason practice Rocball game against a mixed team of players and the Islanders II. The Mixed team, led by John Nekaifes, defeated the Naturals in the first set 15 to 13. In the first set, Eugene Solomon was the leading scorer with two aces. In the second set, the Naturals defeated the Islanders II..... 17 to15.

For most of the Islander II team, it was their first experience for playing Rocball. And, two of the Islander II team players, started their first Rocball game with aces off their first serves. Jolyn Suares and Kevin Yamada both scored two points off their first serve in their first Rocball game. In the game between the Naturals and Islanders II, Frantolee Tito was the leading scorer with an ace and a kee.

On Wednesday, October 03, 2007, the World Champions of World (WCW) squeaked out a 50 to 49 win over No-Mercy. There were 9 aces, 13 backcourt kees, and 5 goals scored. Tyce Mister of WCW and Myron Laniyo of No-Mercy slammed in two goals each during the game. Myron Laniyo of No-Mercy was the games heavy hitter with 3 aces, 3 kees, and 2 goals for 18 points. No-Mercy won the first two sets 18 to 13 and 15 to 14. But, WCW burned No-Mercy in the third set 17 to 8. And, even though No-Mercy was leading in the fourth set 8 to 6, it was to little to late. Because, for the preseason practice games held during the lunch hour, game is over when the bell to return to class sounds off.

While I'm in the mind set of setting up nine games of 18 teams from 12 noon to 9 pm, each game with four sets of 15 points, that is approximately an hour a game. not taking in a game that goes into overtime, I was thinking of the reason the Federation International de Volleyball (FIVB) changed volleyball from side-out to rallypoint.

Is it possible that under a quarter/set system of play, where this kind of team net sport has incorporated multiple point scoring, included vertical areas of play, created a penalty system, eliminated the two point margin for victory, and gave the service team scoring advantage and closure more regulate-able (not sure there is such a word), than what the FIVB has stumbled around with by incorporating rally point?

World Champions of the World start rocball title defense against Islanders II

        By Roselyn B. Monroyo
        Variety News Staff

THE 2007-2008 season of the World Organized Rocball League will begin today with the defending champion, World Champions of the World (formerly Watch & Learn) starting their title defense against the Islanders II at the Marianas High School Gym.

World Champions of the World claimed last season?s championship after dethroning the Mwaliyas in a best-of-five championship series, 3-0.
The Islanders II will be challenging the defending champions at 11:30 a.m.
Eighteen teams will be participating in the league this season with the rest of the field playing their debut games this Saturday.

League organizer and Saipan rocball creator James Feger decided to hold games every Saturday to give community and college players a chance to participate in the tournament.

Feger also allowed participants to practice and play in preseason games for more than two weeks to learn the do?s and don?ts of the sport.
?By now, all teams are expected to be familiar with the rules of the game,? Feger said in a news release.

Teams will be allowed to play only if they have a minimum of four players. If a team is 10 minutes late for a match, it loses the first set. If a squad is 15 minutes late, the game will be forfeited.

          Rocball regular season kicks off

The islands' indigenous sport of Rocball returned last Saturday with the first eight regular season games booked for 2007 at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.

In the first game, Team By Luck defeated the Chukese Warriors by juicing out in four sets, 68-34. Melvin Yamat of By Luck was the game's heavy hitter with four aces, two kees, and a xunk for 14 points.

No-Use then dropped the DOTA All-Stars in four sets, 65-12, in the second game. However, Mark Reyes of the DOTA All-Stars was the game's heavy hitter with five aces, two kees, and a goal for 17 points.

In the day's third game, Team Malat was able to lay back and cruise into the winners' bracket as the Sonics failed to show up for their match and lost by forfeit.

The fourth game then saw Team Seven and the Jammers pound out a hard four sets of play where neither team was able to juice out and forced an o-kon showdown.

At the end of the regular four sets of play, the Jammers had the points, 46-43, but they lost the closing set, 18-15. Rocball rules state that in order for a team to juice out, it must have scored more game points than its opponents and win the fourth set.

According to Rocball creator James Feger, a team cannot win a game in a losing set and a team cannot win a game with less game points than its opponents' if it wins the fourth set. In o-kon/overtime the team with the most game points needs to win one set and the team with the less game points needs to win two o-kon. O-kon is won by 10 points, service team closure, or a goal; whichever comes first.

The Jammers won the game in first o-kon by a close 10-9 score. Ben Lisua of Team Seven was the game's heavy hitter with four aces, a xunk, and a goal for 13 points.

The NG Force also forced the game into overtime in the fifth game of the day by winning the fourth set from the Naturals, 16-8. What made it special was it was the only set of the regular game that they won.

At the end of the quarter/set system of play, the Naturals swamped the NG Force 63-36, but failed to close out the game in a winning set. Not to be denied the victory, the Naturals overcame their weak ending of the fourth set of regular play by winning the game in first o-kon, 10-4.

Evenflow and team Try-Out battled back and forth winning two sets each in the sixth game of the Rocball marathon. In the first set, it was Evenflow 17-10. In the second set, it was Try-Out 16-13, In the third set, it was Try-Out again 15-14, but in the final set of regular play, Evenflow powered their way to a 15-5 fourth-set victory that gave them the game with a juice out win 59-46.

The heavy hitter for this game was John Nekaifes of Evenflow with two aces and four kees for 12 points.

In the day's seventh match between Monota and Team 691, the competition didn't end until the second o-kon off a goal from Ray Amandos of Monota.

In this game, Team 691 won the first and second sets, 16-10 and 15-8. In the third and fourth sets, Monota won 16-9 and 16-13. Monota didn't score enough game points to juice out in the fourth set and the game went in to overtime.

According to Feger, Team 691 had the advantage because they only needed to win one o-kon to win the game. But Monota skunked Team 691 in first o-Kon, 11-0. Team 691 bounced back in the second and last overtime set and was leading 6-5 when Ray slammed in a goal that ending the game and sealed Monota in the winners' bracket for next Saturday.

In the last game of the day, teams made up of veteran and new Rocball players lead by Myron Laniyo of No-Mercy and Val Taisacan of the Islanders played a hard-hitting, four-set game.

No Mercy won the first set, 21-18, but the Islanders bounced back and won the second set, 18-14. In the third set, No-Mercy had the momentum and pounded the Islanders, 15-7. In the fourth and final set of regular play, the Islanders knocked out an 18-12 win.

At the end of regular play, it was No-Mercy, 73, and Islanders, 61. But it was the Islander's fourth set win that prevented No-Mercy from juicing-out.

In the first set o-kon there was no mercy in No-Mercy as they skunked the Islanders 11-0 for the last win of the night.

Laniyo finished as the game's heavy hitter with two aces, five kees, and a goal for 17 points. But all teams should beware of the hard-hitting goal scoring method of Jerry Saures of the Islanders. Saures' power coming off the backcourt is something other players will have to try and contain, noted Feger. (Rocball)

Locals Boys scalp Chuukese Warriors, 10-7

            By Mark Rabago
            Assistant Editor

Local Boys outlasted the Chuukese Warriors, 10-7, in the first overtime of last Saturday's resumption of the World Organized Rocball Community League at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.

The game was one of eight matches that featured 16 of the league's teams that were played over the weekend.

Locals Boys cruised to 16-1 and 15-8 victories in the first two sets before the Warriors bounced right back with victories in the third and fourth sets, 17-9 and 15-14.

The final score was 54-41 in favor of the Local Boys, but because the Warriors won the fourth set and stopped the Local Boys from juicing out, both teams were forced into overtime, which Local Boys eventually took advantage of.

Chuukese Warriors' Jeremy Rabay was the game's heavy hitter with five aces and one kee for 12 points.

            No-Use beats Ng Force (OT)

No-Use leaned on a Sivas Awes goal in first overtime to beat No-Use in the second game of Saturday's Rocball marathon.

No-Use won the first three sets, 15-9, 16-12, and 17-8. But No-Use wasn't able to juice out, losing in the fourth set to Ng Force. Awes finished as the game's heavy hitter with a xunk, two kees, and a goal for a total of nine points.

            Evenflow beats Monota

Evenflow avoided an overtime game in Saturday's third match by knocking out Monota in all four sets, 16-5, 15-9, 17-14, and played its strongest in the fourth set by crushing Monota 15-2 to juice out for the win.

The heavy hitter for the game was John Nekaifes of Evenflow with four aces and two kees for 12 points.

            Naturals beat Malat (2OT)

Naturals and Malat had to bang out two overtime sets before the former won the game. Malat won the first two sets, 17-11 and 17-7. But Naturals came back in the third and fourth sets, returning the favor, 15-13 and 17-8

Even though Naturals won the fourth set, they came up short on game points. At the end of four sets of play, Malat had 55 points as against Naturals' 50 points.

With momentum on their side, Naturals beat down on Malat in first overtime, 10-3, and repeated their performance in the second OT, 10-3, to come away with the victory.

The game's heavy hitter was Jordon Marciano of Malat with five aces for 10 points.

            DOTA All-Stars beat Sonics (OT)

A couple of teams made up of basketball players looking for a different kind of net sport saw action in the fifth game with DOTA All-Stars defeating the Sonics in overtime.

The DOTA All-Stars outscored the Sonics in the first two sets, 18-14 and 17-6. In the third set, DOTA All-Stars skunked the Sonics, 17-0. However, in the fourth set the Sonics pulled together and stopped DOTA All-Stars, 16-14, and prevented their tormentors from juicing out.

In the first overtime set, DOTA All-Stars seemed to regain their balance and dumped the Sonics 11-6 to win the game.

The heavy hitter of the game was Mark Reyes of DOTA All-Stars with four aces, two kees, and a goal for 15 points.

            Islanders beat Seven

The Islanders juiced out Seven in four sets, 63-50, in Saturday's sixth game. The Islanders lost the first set, 16-14, but came back in the last three sets, 16-10, 16-11, and 17-13 to take the win.

At the completion of the regular four sets of play, the Islanders scored 63 points and won the fourth set to juice out.

The heavy hitter of the game was Jerry Saures of the Islanders with six aces and a kee for 14 points.

            Try-Outs beat Team 691

Try-Outs juiced out to beat Team 691 in four sets, 63-21. Try-Outs won all sets, 15-2, 16-7, 16-0, and 16-12.

Try-Outs played a five-man team until their female player Mika Okuba entered the game late in the fourth set.

This was Okuba's first game and she started out at left of the goalie, played the goalie, and successfully blocked a ball from scoring. On the first serve of her first Rocball game, she scored an ace and closed out the game with a score for Try-Outs.

The heavy hitter of the game was Jazz Roskow of Try-Outs with two aces and five kees for 14 points.

No Mercy beats by Luck (OT)

No-Mercy defeated BY Luck in the first overtime to win the final game of the night.

No-Mercy was true to its name in the first three sets, annihilating By Luck, 16-10, 17-11, and 17-5.

Then the bottom inexplicably dropped out from under No-Mercy as By Luck skunked them in the fourth set, 16-0.

By winning the fourth set, By Luck forced the game into overtime. But the advantage was with No-Mercy as they only needed to win one OT set because they had the most points after four sets of play, 49-42.

By Luck needed to prevail in two OTs to win the game. No-Mercy regrouped and won the game in the first OT, 10-2, to finally wrap up the win. The heavy hitter of this game was Shane Yamada of No-Mercy with four aces, two kees, and a goal for 15 points.

Saturday's 6pm game between the Jammers and WCW has been rescheduled to Wednesday, Oct. 24, 3:30pm at the MHS Gym.

The WCW and Jammers will be the last two teams to compete and complete Round 2 of this year's Rocball season

              4 teams say sayonara

              Assistant Editor / Saipan Tribune

Four teams were eliminated as the 2007 World Organized Rocball Community League ended its third round last Saturday at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.

Chuukese Warriors, NG Force, Team 691, and last year's defending champions Watch & Learn all didn't make the first cut of the season.

The first 10 teams to lose three games or default in competition by not showing up for their scheduled matches twice will be eliminated from this year's run for the title of Rocball's world champions, according to the sport's creator James Feger.

              Team Seven beats Malat (2OT)

Team Seven defeated Malat in the second set overtime to win the first game of last Saturday's Rocball marathon at the MHS Gym.

Ryan Lisua of Malat was the game's heavy hitter with five aces, two xunks, two kees, and a goal for 21 points.

The game was forced into two overtime sets when Team Seven stopped Malat from juicing out in the fourth set. Team Seven lost the first three sets, won the fourth set, but were trailing in game points, 40-56, and needed to win both overtime sets to come from behind and upset Malat.

              No-Use beats Naturals

No-Use had no need for any overtime sets in their juice-out victory over the Naturals in the second game.

No-Use came out strong in the first set, 16-4, but struggled in the second set to edge out a 19-18 win. In the third set, No-Use spiked their way to an easy 16-4 romp, but had trouble putting the game away in the fourth set.

The Naturals fought hard to force the game into overtime, but came short and lost to a juice-out fourth set, 15-18.

              Sonics beat Chukese Warriors

Coming off a basketball game an hour before their Rocball match, Sonics juiced out in four sets against the Chuukese Warriors, 67-39.

The game was a difference between teamwork and individual effort. The game's heavy hitter was Jeremy Rabay of the Chuukese Warriors with five aces and four kees for 18 points.

              Try-Out beats Monota

In the game between Try-Outs and Monota, the former chose not to give the latter any breaks and proceeded to double up their opponents in a juice-out 69-31 victory. There was a tie for the game's heavy hitter as Try-Outs' Larry Sharry scored three aces, a kee, and a goal for 11 points to mirror teammate Tito Wilfred's effort of four aces and one a goal, also good for 11 points.

              Islanders beat NG Force (OT)

The Islanders and NG Force bombed and banged their way through four sets, 17-5, 16-15, 15-12, and 16-14 for a game score of 58-52. But NG Force won the fourth set 16-14 to stop the Islanders from juicing-out and sought to defeat their opponents in overtime.

Ending the fourth set with 52 points, the NG Force needed to win two overtime sets to win the game. The Islanders lost the fourth set but outscored their opponents with 58 points, and only needed to win one overtime set.

Val Taisacan finished the game with a goal in first overtime to hand the victory to the Islanders. He also was the game's heavy hitter with three aces, five kees, and the game-winning goal for 19 points.

              Evenflow beats Team

In the final game of the evening, Evenflow and Team 691 battled it out through four sets of competition in a juice-out game.

Evenflow won the first set 15-10 and Team 691 won the second set 16-11. After two sets of play, Team 691 had caught up and tied the game 26-26.

In the third set, Evenflow took the lead and barely contained Team 691 before ending the set, 16-13.

In the final set of play, Evenflow avoided the risk of going into overtime by getting the lead and holding Team 691 to a 16-6 win and juiced-out a hard-fought win.

The heavy hitters of the game were the team captains. John Nekaifes of Evenflow scored three aces and two kees for 10 points and Dean Mathew scored two aces and two goals for 10 points.

                Three more teams Knocked-Out

                By Mark Rabago
                Assistant Editor / Saipan Tribune

Sonics, Monota, and Team Seven were eliminated as the 2007 World Organized Rocball Community League ended its fourth round last Saturday at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.

According to Rocball creator James Feger, this year's community Rocball season is now down to 11 teams out of the original 18.

He added that last week's game between By-Luck and the Jammers had been rescheduled to a weeknight. If By Luck loses to the Jammers, one more team will be eliminated. If the Jammers lose, both teams will head into this coming weekend's games with two losses each.

                Naturals beat Seven

In the opening game, Naturals juiced-out in four sets to beat Team Seven, 55-50. Team Seven actually started off strong by taking the first and second sets, 16-9 and 15-14.

But Naturals caught fire in the preceding sets, thumping Team Seven 17-10 in the third and 15-9 in the fourth.

The Naturals scored enough points to overcome Team Seven's two-set lead plus the needed points to juice-out.

The heavy hitters of the game were Typhoon Saito and Yumi Sharry of Naturals and Ben Lisua and Richard Igisomar of Team Seven who had eight points each. Between these four players, there were four aces and 12 backcourt kees for 32 game points.

                Malat beats Monota

Malat learned from last week's mistakes wherein they scored the most points but eventually lost to Team Seven in double overtime when they juiced-out Monota, 65-38, in four sets.

Malat won all four sets of regular play in their game against the Monota, 16-12, 16-10, 17-9, and 16-7 for the juice-out victory.

The heavy hitter of the game was Ryan Lisua of Malat with three aces and two kees for 10 points.

                Local Boys beat Sonics

Local Boys didn't take any chances and juiced-out for a 56-42 victory over the Sonics.

The Local Boys jumped to an early lead against the Sonics by easily winning the first two sets.

The team, however, was a bit overconfident in the third and suffered a 15-7 reversal. In the fourth and final set, Local Boys had a hard time scoring off their serve as the Sonics put up a good fight before losing, 17-13.

The heavy hitters of the game were the captains for each team-Kevin Yamada of the Local Boys and Jon Lim of the Sonics-who scored two aces and two kees, good for 10 game points apiece.

                No-Use beats Try-Outs

In the match between veteran Rocball players and good volleyball players, No-Use took full advantage of their experience to beat a still-adjusting Try-Outs team in a juice-out 62-36 win.

Feger said No-Use is made up of players who have been playing Rocball for years, while the players of Try-Outs are volleyball players just recently making the switch.

Try-Outs players are still adapting to penalty serves, two point aces, two-point backcourt scoring, and being conscious of the vertical court areas (goals), which extend the playing court to include three-point scores.

No-Use scored six aces, eight kees, and three goals against Try-Outs. Try-Outs scored three aces, three kees, and made three service errors. Team No-Use played smart as they knew fully well they were up against a team of good players still adapting to the nuances between Rocball and rally point scoring, said Feger

The heavy hitter of the game was Ichnis Kapwich of No Use with an ace, two kees, and one of the three goals No-Use scored against the Try-Outs for nine points.

                Evenflow beats Islanders (2OT)

The match between Evenflow and Islanders was the hardest and closest game of the day. The Islanders scorched Evenflow in the first set, 17-3. Although down but not discouraged, Evenflow evened the set count with a 16-4 dumping of the Islanders in the second.

After two sets of play, the game score was Islanders leading Evenflow, 21-19. The Islanders regrouped in the third set and outlasted a nervous Evenflow team, 17-11.

In the third set both teams ran into a series of bad serves that cost them set points. The Islanders lost points at service twice but were able to pull out of the slump. Evenflow wasn't as lucky. They fell into a service slump and weren't able to pull out of it in enough time to stop the Islanders from winning the third set.

In the fourth set, Evenflow showed its resilience.

Evenflow was trailing the Islanders by eight points after the third, but almost won enough points in the fourth set to overcome their deficit and juiced-out. Evenflow won the fourth set, 16-9, and came up two points short of juicing-out, 46-47.

Evenflow won the fourth set with the least amount of game points and the Islander lost the fourth set with the most amount of game points. In order for a Rocball game to be won in the four sets, a team must win the fourth set with more game points than its opponent. Neither the Islanders nor Evenflow was able to end the game in four sets.

In overtime, o-kon in Rocball jargon, the team with the most game points scored after four sets but didn't juice out needs to win one o-kon set to win the game. The team that won the fourth set but scored the least amount of game points, needs to win two o-kons. O-kons or a goal, whichever is scored first, ends the set.

Last week, the Islanders were in a similar situation and team captain Val Taisacan came up with the big play in the first set and scored a goal in the early part of that game's first o-kon. But this week, Evenflow put up a good defense at the goal and took command of the game by winning both o-kons, 12-4 and 11-4, to improve its record to 4-0.

                No-Mercy beats Jammers

In the last game on Saturday night, No-Mercy took control early in the game and used heavy hits to improve to 4-0.

No-Mercy racked up 13 aces, 11 kees, and a goal against a struggling Jammers team that seemed a little out of practice after coming off two earlier easy wins. Jammers, made up of a combination of solid veteran and newcomers to Rocball, never seemed to get their balance. No-Mercy held the Jammers to six heavy hits off of three aces and three kees.

Myron Laniyo of No-Mercy was the game's heavy hitter with three aces and five kees for 16 points.

Are you referring to the rather startled expression of my avatar? Well, you didn't see what the cameraman was doing....
