Dublon Chiefs hammering Ballers in rocball action

    By Shan Seman
    Reporter

The Dublon Chiefs are close to picking up win No. 2 as the team dominated against the Ballers yesterday in the ongoing World Organized Rocball Community League at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.

The two teams managed to get three sets in the books, and unfortunately for the Ballers, all belonged to the Chiefs.

The Chiefs almost skunked their opponents in all sets, but instead settled for two scratch victories and a skunk to take a 51-9 lead with one more set remaining.

The Chiefs controlled the action in the first set, jumping out to a 6-0 lead courtesy of hits by Ybonn Kapwich and Ichnis Kapwich. While the Ballers were struggling to put the ball in play with first serves, the Chiefs looked for a shut out win skunk in rocball terms. Ichnis was able to connect for a goal, making it 11-4. He then followed up with a xunk and opted to subtract two points from the Ballers. The Chiefs did not get the skunk, but instead, won via scratch after limiting their opponents to below eight points with the 19-2 win.

The Chiefs were itching for the skunk, and again gunned for the feat in the second set. Like the previous set, the Chiefs dominated and this time around, Ybonn Kapwich was able to connect for a goal to hghlight his team's charge. All was going well until the Ballers spoiled the Chiefs' skunk bid by scoring a point late in the set.

It was defeinitely the Chiefs' day, though, as the Ballers committed another mishap on first serve, which brought their score back to zero. The Chiefs seized the opportunity and quickly put an end to the set for a 16-0 skunk victory.

The Ballers put up their best effort in the third set as the team played better defense in digging up shots by their opponents. Robert Naraja was also effective from the service line, serving up a long floater that made its way past the goalie for a goal.

That was the last push by the Ballers as the Chiefs closed the set strong for another scratch, 16-7.

The fourth set will be played today at 11:30am.

    8) Ybonn Kapwich currently leads the Chiefs with 13 points after hammering away for four aces, a kee, and a goal. Ichnis Kapwich also scored nine points on two aces, a xunk, a kee, and a goal.

Naraja has three points for the Ballers with a goal.

      Dublon Chiefs win second straight

      By Shan Seman
      Reporter

The Dublon Chiefs showed no mercy and played the same way yesterday as they did on Monday to blow away the Ballers in the ongoing World Organized Rocball Community League at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.

After winning the first three sets with ease, the Dublon Chiefs picked up where they left off and quickly put an end to the match by winning the fourth set for a 70-14 annihilation.

The Chiefs were not satisfied with their 51-9 lead heading into the final set, and so the team remained focused and hammered shot after shot to dominate the fourth.

J.R. Rudolph connected for three aces, Ichnis Kapwich bruised the ball for two kees, and with the team holding match point, Ybonn Kapwich closed it out with an exclamation point as he drilled in a goal for the 19-5 scratch victory.

In rocball, a scratch is when a team limits the opposition to below eight points. A scunk is a shut out, with the opposition failing to close the set with a point.

For the first time this season, a team was able to win all sets via skunk or scratch.

As reported earlier, the Chiefs got off to a sizzling start on Monday and controlled the first set for a scratch, 19-2, with Ichnis Kapwich highlighting their run with a goal.

It got worse for the Ballers as the Chiefs were able to scunk the opposition with a 16-0 win in the second set, with Ybonn Kapwich hitting a goal. The Ballers actually had a point in the set, but a mishap on first serve erased the point and brought the team back to zero.

Robert Naraja had a goal fro the Ballers in the third set, but it wasn't enough to fire up his crew as Chiefs again dominated and cruised to a 16-7 scratch victory.

With the win, the Dublon Chiefs tie defending champion Mwaliyas atop the team standings as both teams sport 2-0 win-loss records. The loss was the second straight for the Ballers in as many chances.

In all, the players were able to connect for 11 aces, three xunks, five kees, and four goals. All came from the Dublon Chiefs' corner except for Naraja's goal.

      8) Ybonn Kapwich finished as the game's heavy hitter with 18 points after going off for four aces, two kees, and two goals. Ichnis Kapwich also had 15 points on two aces, a xunk, three kees, and a goal, while Rudolph finished with 12 points on four aces and two xunks.

Second round action continues today as the Bwibwiis and 670's Finest battle at 11:30am. Whoever survives will come out with win No. 1 after both teams fell in the first round.

Bwibwiis leading 670's Finest after two sets

        By Shan Seman
        Reporter: Saipan Tribune

The Bwibwiis and 670?s Finest both entered their contest without a win, and by the time the two split today, one will have secured victory No. 1.

The two collided for the first two sets of a four-set regulation bout yesterday, and when time expired, it was the Bwibwiis holding an 11-point edge as the team currently leads their bout, 29-18.

The Bwibwiis got off on the right foot as Darrel Moteisou connected for a goal to get their scoring push started. Moteisou was far from done, and added another goal midway through the set, highlighting a 17-3 scratchk victory.

In Rocball, a scratchk is when a team beats another and limits the opposition to under eight points.

While the Bwibwiis were hitting away with a bang, the 670?s Finest were cold as the team also suffered from a mishap on first serve as subtracted a point from their corner.

The first set loss was more than enough to wake the 670?s Finest players as the team returned with a fury in the second set. Despite three mishaps on first serve-minus three points-and a xunk by Jimmy Pua that took off another two points from the 670?s Finest score, the team was able to get over the hill.

Joe Pangelinan hit an ace and a kee, Mike Salas had an ace, and Carlos Rivera also busted loose with a kee to lead the team to a 15-12 victory.

But the huge deficit after the first set was too big to overcome, and despite dropping the second set, the Bwibwiis were still able to maintain a double-digit advantage.

The first two sets of the bout featured six aces, a xunk, two kees, and two goals.

Moteisou currently leads the campaign for heavy hitter with 10 points after bruising the ball for two aces and two goals for the Bwibwiis.

Pangelinan leads the 670? Finest crew with four points on an ace and a kee.

The bout resumes today at 11:30am.

          Bwibwiis pick up first win

The Bwibwiis can breath a little easier now after the team broke into the win column yesterday at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.

After controlling the bout and entering yesterday's contest with an 11-point lead, the Bwibwiis played well and closed out the match in regulation for a 61-27 juice out victory over 670's Finest.

As reported earlier, the Bwibwiis led 29-18 after the first two sets were played on Wednesday.

The 670's Finest crew was looking to build on its second set victory, but the Bwibwiis had other things in mind and quickly re-established their dominance.

The team dominated from start to finish, and stretched their lead with an easy 17-5 victory.

With that, the Bwibwiis were just a set away from claiming their first win as they led, 46-23, with one set remaining.

Despite trailing by a huge margin, the 670's Finest squad was not out it as in Rocball, the team leading entering the fourth set must win the set in order to close out the match.

With that, if the 670's Finest pulls out a win in the fourth set, the match will be sent into o-kon-overtime in Rocball.

Unfortunately for 670's Finest, the Bwibwiis were just too much to handle. The 670 crew managed just four points in the fourth set, while the Bwibwiis hit cruise control and racked up 17 points to close the bout.

On Wednesday, the Bwibwiis were able to get off on the right foot as Darrel Moteisou smacked in a couple of goals to fuel a 17-3 scratch victory.

In Rocball, a scratch is when a team beats another and limits the opposition to under eight points.

The 670's Finest players came back stronger in the second set, as Joe Pangelinan hit an ace and a kee, Mike Salas had an ace, and Carlos Rivera also busted up a kee to lead the team to a 15-12 victory.

The match featured 15 aces, two xunks, three kees, and two goals.

Moteisou finished as the game's heavy hitter with 10 points after bruising the ball for two aces and two goals for the Bwibwiis. Jordan Igisomar was also solid for the squad, smacking the ball for four aces for eight points.

Pangelinan, Rivera, and Salas led the 670' Finest crew with four points apiece. Pangelinan had an ace and a kee, Rivera smacked in an ace and a kee, and Salas had an ace and a xunk.

Da Lani Kynez inches closer to rocball lead

            By Roselyn B. Monroyo
            Variety News Staff

DA Lani Kynez recovered from an opening set loss to move within a set of claiming their second win in the 2006 World Organized Rocball high school tournament yesterday at the Marianas High School Gym.
Da Lani Kynez bowed to Kich Fairo in the closely fought first set, 12-15, but swept the next two sets to take the lead, 45-37, going into the fourth set.

With Kaleo Laniyo drilling the lone goal so far in the game in the closing part of the second set, Da Lani Kynez nailed an 18-8 triumph in that canto.

Da Lani Kynez maintained its momentum in the third set pulling off a 15-12 victory to post a nine-point lead after three sets.

Only the first three sets of the match was played yesterday, as students needed to return to class. The game resumes today with Da Lani Kynez and Kich Fairo playing a full fourth set.

If Da Lani Kynez wins the fourth set and still has the lead after the regulation, it will cruise to its second victory in as many games and join the defending champions Mwaliyas and Dublan Chiefs on top of the team standings.

If it losses, but still holds the lead, Kich Fairo will force an overtime and will need to win two sets to secure the victory. Da Lani Kynez only needs to prevail once to wrap up the game.

If Kich Kairo wins and steal the lead, it will also gain its second triumph in as many games and boot Da Lani Kynez in the three-way tie for first place.

Myron Laniyo was leading Da Lani Kynez with 18 points on seven kees and two aces. Stephanie Arnold has added six markers on three kees.

Wein Kapwich was pacing Kich Fairo with six points on three aces.

Eleven aces, one xunx, 11 kees and one goal have been scored in the game.

Ten teams are fighting for the championship in the 23rd edition of the annual tournament.
Watch & Learn, which is composed of teachers, has a 1-0 record, the Bwi Bwiis hold a 1-1 slate, the Caropinos had lost their lone game and Black Magic dropped its first two matches.

Da Lani Kynez wins two in a row

              Variety News Staff

DA Lani Kynez posted back-to-back wins in the 2006 World Organized Rocball high school tournament following its juiced-out victory against Kich Fairo yesterday at the Marianas High School Gym.

Da Lani Kynez nailed a 17-point triumph, 60-43, to maintain a perfect 2-0 record and join defending champions the Mwaliyas and the Dublan Chiefs in the leaderboard.

Kich Fairo dropped to a 1-1 slate.

Da Lani Kynez secured its second win in as many games after prevailing in the fourth set, 15-7.

Only the fourth set was played yesterday, as Da Lani Kynez and Kich Fairo battled in the first three set last Monday.

Kich Fairo took the first set, 15-12, but failed to sustain its momentum in the second set, which Da Lani Kynez won by 10 points, 18-8, with Kaleo Laniyo drilling the lone goal in the match.

Da Lani Kynez and Kich Fairo had a close fight in the third set with the former winning by only three, 15-12, to take a 45-37 lead going into the last set.

Rocball created Jim Feger temporarily stopped the match after three sets, as students need to return to class. When the match resumed yesterday, Kich Fairo was hoping to win the fourth set to send the game in o-kon.

But Da Lani Kynez had other plans and it did not include playing extended minutes. It picked up where it left off completing the sweep of the last three sets of the match with an eight-point win in the fourth set.

              8) Myron Laniyo was the game?s heavy hitter with 22 points on nine kees and two aces. Stephanie Arnold added eight with four kees.

Fourteen aces, two xunxs, 16 kees and a goal were scored in the game

670's Finest leading Caropinos after two sets

                        By Shan Seman
                        Reporter: Saipan Seman

With their season on the line, the 670's Finest put up their best performance yet in the ongoing World Organized Rocball Community League and currently lead Caropinos after two sets of play yesterday at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.

Playing their first game of the season after losing the first two via default, the Caropinos gave their opponents a good fight, but trail by eight points, 22-30, midway through regulation.

The Finest crew was strong in the opening set and got big contributions from Joe Pangelinan and Michael Salas to slip past the opposition, 15-10.

The team received stiffer resistance in the second set from the Caropinos, but despite the tough challenge, the 670 squad was able to increase the lead with a 15-12 win.

Although down, the Caropinos are still alive as the team can still fight back in the third and fourth sets, which will be played today beginning at 11:30am.

Even if 670's Finest takes the third set, the Caropinos can still make a comeback as long as the team wins the fourth set.

In Rocball, the team leading the game must win the fourth set to close out the match. If the team leading drops the fourth set, the bout will go into o-kon-overtime in Rocball terms.

Whoever leads the overall point tally heading into overtime will have the advantage as the team will only need to win one set to be victorious. The team trailing heading into o-kon must win two sets to win the match.

Pangelinan currently leads all scorers with 10 points after knocking in four aces and a kee, while Mathew Iguel and Kevin Aldan lead Caropinos with six points apiece. Iguel nailed three aces, while Aldan has two aces and a kee.

Both the Caropinos and 670's Finest are in must-win situations as both currently sport 0-2 win-loss records. Teams with three losses will be eliminated from further competition.

Rocball action continues on Wednesday, as the Bwibwiis try to improve their 1-1 record against defending champion Mwaliyas, which is currently in a four-way tie atop the team standings with a perfect 2-0 record.

Powerhouse and undefeated Watch & Learn (2-0) will then take on the 1-1 Kich Fairo squad on Dec. 11.

The third round will then come to a close with a battle of the unbeatens as Da Lani Kynez and Dublan Chiefs face off on Dec. 13.

The Chiefs, Mwaliyas, Da Lani Kynez, and Watch & Learn currently occupy the top spot with identical records.

Caropinos eliminate 670's Finest with 4th set explosion

                          Reporter: Saipan Tribune

The Caropinos refused to give in and remained alive in the ongoing 2006 World Organized Rocball Community League.

Despite losing the first three sets, the team pulled together and did what was needed to stun 670's Finest and all in attendance with a 52-48 juice out victory yesterday at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.

As reported earlier, the Caropinos were trailing by eight points after losing the first two sets on Monday.

The two teams met again yesterday to complete their bout, and at first, it seemed like 670's Finest had it all figured out.

The Caropinos put up a better charge in the third set, but still could not bring down the Finest crew. The two teams were neck and neck, but in the end, 670's Finest was still able to win, 15-14, and padded its lead to nine points, 45-36, in the overall points tally.

It turned out, though, that the lead was not large enough for 670's Finest.

Caropinos knew that all they needed to do was win the fourth set and force o-kon to keep their chances alive. But instead of taking that option, the team decided to pull off a big comeback and put an end to the match in regulation.

With that, the Caropinos furiously pounded away in the fourth set, and Ryan Lisua was able to connect on the goal late in the set to help his team reach its goal.

The tables turned, and by the time the Caropinos were through, the team blew away the opposition, 16-3.

Not only did Caropinos won the set, but they did what they set out to do. Because of the fourth set result, the Caropinos managed to overcome the deficit and win the match.

Mathew Iguel was the game's heavyhitter with 12 points after connecting on six aces, while Mariano Lisua and Ryan Lisua added 10 and five points. Mariano had four aces and a xunk, while Ryan had an ace and a goal.

Joe Tumaquip led 670's Finest with 12 points on five aces and a kee, while Kevin Aldan added eight points after hitting three aces and a kee.

Rocball action continues today as the Bwibwiis try to improve their 1-1 record against defending champion Mwaliyas, which is currently in a four-way tie atop the team standings with a perfect 2-0 record.

Powerhouse and also undefeated Watch & Learn (2-0) will then take on the 1-1 Kich Fairo squad on Dec. 11.

The third round will then come to a close with a battle of the unbeatens as Da Lani Kynez and Dublan Chiefs face off on Dec. 13.

The Chiefs, Mwaliyas, Da Lani Kynez, and Watch & Learn currently occupy the top spot with identical records.

Defending champion Mwaliyas remained unbeaten after stuffing Bwibwiis, 65-31, yesterday in the ongoing World Organized Rocball Community League at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.

Mwaliyas recieved little resistance in two of the four sets played and cruised to their third straight victory.

With the win, Mwaliyas sits atop the team standings, with three others right behind with 2-0 win-loss records.

Mwaliyas dominated the first set as the team pounded away en route to a 16-6 victory. The defending champions got a big lift from Denri Fiden and Shane Yamada as the two highlighted their run with consecutive goals.

The Bwibwiis put up a better fight in the second set, but still couldn't match Mwaliyas' push. The Mwaliyas players were able to steam ahead for a 16-11 win, and increase their lead in the overall points tally to 15 points, 32-17.

The Bwibwiis then went cold as the team struggled in the third set and was limited to just three points. Mwaliyas, on the other hand, remained on fire and broke out to a commanding, 48-20 lead, courtesy of a 16-3 win.

The Bwibwiis were determined to send the bout into o-kon, but their efforts came up a bit short in the fourth set as Mwaliyas closed strong for a 17-11 clincher.
